Gendered intersections
Following the structure of the first edition of Gendered Intersections, this second edition examines the intersections across and between gender, race, culture, class, ability, sexuality, age and geographical location from the perspectives of academics, artists and activists. Using different mediums — academic research, poetry, statistics, visual essays, fiction, emails and music — this collection explores gender through issues such as Aboriginal self-governance, poverty, work, spirituality, globalization and community activism. This new edition brings a greater focus on politics, and gender and the law. It also includes access to a Gendered Intersections website, which contains several performances by poets and a Gendered Intersections Quiz, which highlights the historical and contemporary contributions of women and non-hegemonic men to Canadian society.- Creator

Making gender, making war
This collection explores the social construction of gender, war-making and peacekeeping. It highlights the institutions and processes involved in the making of gender in terms of both men and women, masculinity and femininity. The 'war question for feminism' marks a thematic red thread throughout: it is a call to students and scholars of feminism to take seriously and engage with the task of analyzing war. Contributors analyze how war-making is intertwined with the making of gender in a diversity of empirical case studies, organized around four themes: gender, violence and militarism: how the making of gender is connected to a (re)making of the nation through military practices: UN SCR 1325 and gender mainstreaming in institutional practices: and gender subjectivities in the organization of violence, exploring the notion of violent women and non-violent men.- Creator

Anchorites, wombs, and tombs
Until recently, the figure of the medieval anchorite and the underlying ideological concepts that framed her day-to-day existence have escaped detailed examination, despite the anchorite’s importance to the study of medieval culture. This collection brings together scholars in the field of gender and anchoritic studies in order to examine anchoritic enclosure from a variety of different perspectives. In so doing, the book offers conclusions about how the phenomenon of anchoritism was affected by, and in turn, influenced contemporary- Creator

Gender in trans-it
'Trans culture' and 'transnation': standing under such terms in the history of science in recent approaches to the discussion, have turned against homogeneous and static concepts of culture and society. The articles in this book discuss on the analytical potential to offer cross-cultural and transnational perspectives. The authors expand the discussion of cultural transfer research, the recent global history and 'migration studies' to the category of gender and thus open for the historical gender studies to new ways.- Creator

Gender and slave emancipation in the Atlantic world
Offering detailed analyses of slave emancipation in specific societies, the contributors discuss all of the diverse actors in emancipation : slaves, abolitionists, free people of colour, state officials, and slave owners. Whether considering the construction of a postslavery masculine subjectivity in Jamaica, the work of two white U.S. abolitionist women with the Freedmen's Bureau after the Civil War, freedwomen's negotiations of labour rights in Puerto Rico, slave women's contributions to the slow unraveling of slavery in French West Africa, or the ways Brazilian abolitionists deployed representations of femininity as virtuous and moral, these essays demonstrate the gains that a gendered apporach offers to understanding the complex processes of emancipation. Some chapters also explore theories and methodologies that enable a gendered reading of postslavery archives. the editors' substantial introduction traces the reasons for and patterns of women's and men's different experiences of emancipation throughout the Atlantic world.- Creator

Gender under construction
Collection of articles discussing gender, with examples of gender constructive processes within various contexts and by means of diverse methodologies. It addresses issues such as gender performativity, its variances depending on their historical, social and cultural contexts and the rituals, representations and institutions involved in gender performances. It demonstrates that it is impossible to consider gender as a fixed biological trait. The authors propose to look at gender performance as an ongoing process in which femininities and masculinities imply dynamic intersections with categories such as nationality, ethnicity, class, sexuality and age. With cases from South Africa, United States and Brazil.- Creator

Femininity, feminism and gendered discoursea: a selected and edited collection of papers from the Fifth International Language and Gender Association Conference (IGALA5)
The three themes, femininity, feminism and gendered discourse are central to research in language and gender. Femininity is a central aspect of gender performance and the process of 'gendering' individuals is ongoing and unavoidable. The first section of this book demonstrates some alternative conceptions of femininity, and a range of ways in which femininity is performed in different contexts and cultures. The analyses illustrate that we are all continually performing aspects of femininity (and masculinity) in flexible, dynamic, ambiguous, predictable and unpredictable ways. The second section of this book demonstrates the value of identifying gendered patterns in in social interaction in a range of spheres. The researchers analyse contemporary international evidence of sexism in language use. The final section of this book focuses on the different ways in which we negotiate our gender through discourse. Gender is just one of many facets of our social identities. The chapters in the third section focus in detail on ways in which gender is constructed through discourse, examining the interaction between individual agency and the larger constraining social structures, including socio-cultural norms, within which that agency is enacted.- Creator

Gender in transition
The late Enlightenment saw an acute transformation of gender definitions in the German cultural areas of Europe, leading to a 'polarization' of the sexes. Where early modern cultural norms had once affirmed a multitude of differences within society, modernity was founded on an ideal of equality which in practice applied only to white male citizens. The new dichotomies of gender, socioeconomic status, and race created by this practice held tremendous social implications for all Germans. Law and science inscribed a new set of morals with gendered virtues and social spheres. Masculinity and femininity came to be understood as opposites based in nature. The transformed gender system fuelled an epochal social reordering. .This book recounts the ways in which this drama played out in German-speaking Europe during the transitional period between 1750 and 1830. Scholars examine the effect of gender in numerous realms of German life, including law, urban politics, marriage, religion, literature, natural science, fashion, and personal relationships.- Creator
