Soldiers of the queen

Soviet women in combat
Presents the history of female combat soldiers in the Soviet army from the 1930’s to 1945 and makes feminist analysis of it. Argues that women who volunteered for the front in 1941 saw the fighting as an expression of a new Soviet womanhood rather than enactment of male roles. Notes that the figure of the female combatant in a mass army invites scholars to consider combat violence as a meaning-carrying social activity and the role it plays in the construction of modern identity.- Creator

Gender, war and conflict
Nowadays, pioneering women are taking their places in formal and informal military structures previously reserved for, and assumed appropriate only for men. Laura Sjoberg explores how gender matters in war-making and war-fighting today. Drawing on a range of examples from conflicts around the world, she shows that both women and men play many more diverse roles in wars than either media or scholarly accounts convey.- Creator

It's my country too
This volume contains historical narratives about the contributions of women in the American military, from the American Revolution to the present wars in the Middle East. Based on diaries, letters, oral histories and memoirs, these women reveal why and how they chose to serve their country. For example, Harriet Tubman (1820-1913) tells her experiences as the first American woman to lead an invasion, freeing some 750 slaves. Linda Bray (1960-) tells about her leading of troops into combat during the war in Panama in the 1980s.- Creator

Camouflage isn't only for combat

Gender and the military
This is a comparative, cross-national study of the participation of women in the armed forces of NATO countries. .This study employs mixed-methodological research design combining quantitative and qualitative data - a large N-analysis based on general policies and statistical information concerning every country in the sample with more in-depth case-studies. This volume includes original empirical data regarding the presence of women in the armed forces of NATO countries, proposes an index of ‘gender inclusiveness’ and assesses the factors that affect women’s military roles. The book also presents two new key case studies – Portugal and the Netherlands - based on both documentary sources and in-depth interviews of both men and women officers in the two countries.- Creator

Gender, military effectiveness, and organizational change
In October 2000, the United Nations Security Council passed Resolution 1325 which reaffirmed the important role of women in the prevention and resolution of conflicts as well as in post-conflict reconstruction. Since the resolution was passed, the Swedish Armed Forces have gone through an impressive process of change that has set the agenda for instituting Resolution 1325 in militaries throughout the world. The Swedish armed forces has evolved to mainstream a gender perspective, conduct training, and to establish specific gender-related functions and institutions such as Gender Field Advisors, Gender Focal Points and the Nordic Centre for Gender in Military Operations.- Creator

Women in combat
