Sea legs
Sea Legs is the story of Kathleen Crane, one of the first women oceanographers out of UCSD's world-renowned Scripps Institution of Oceanography. As a consequence of the difficulty of working in the U.S. gender segregated society during the 70s, she felt her only scientific future lay with cooperation with Europeans and even the Soviet Union during the height of the Cold War. In the process she became an 'accidental diplomat.' An explorer, environmentalist, and filmmaker, Crane's story encompasses the world's oceans, politics, and international relations, scientific espionage, ships, and a passion for the natural world- Creator

Rachel Carson
Rachel Carson, who was a nature and science writer, has been credited with founding the modern environmental movement. 'Silent Spring', published in 1962, provoked a public outcry against the dangers of indiscriminate pesticide use and chemical toxins in the environment. Exposing her enthusiasm for the natural world and the depth of her writings, the contributors to this book examine her books, speeches, essays, and the letters she wrote as she prepared to die from breastcancer. Themes in the book are: a legacy of activism and advocacy: ethics on land and sea: reflections on gender and science: an ongoing toxic discourse: and a legacy of wonder.- Creator

Elizabeth Blackburn and the story of telomeres
Biologist Elizabeth Blackburn (born. 1948) is a prize-winning scientist. She is renouned for groundbreaking research on telomeres, i.e. chromosome ends. She made headlines in 2004 when she was dismissed from the President's Council on Bioethics after objecting to the council's call for a moratorium on stem cell research and protesting the suppression of relevant scientific evidence. In this biography Brady tells exactly how Blackburn made her scientific discoveries. She explores Blackburn's struggle to break down barriers in an elite, male dominated profession, her role as a mentor to other women scientists, and the collaborative nature of scientific work. She also portraits the private person, who had the wisdom to hide her vast ambition beneath the guise of a sweet, well-behaved young lady.- Creator
