Women's movements in twentieth-century Taiwan
This book considers women's movements and feminist discourses in twentieth-century Taiwan. The author examines the way in which Taiwanese women in the twentieth century selectively appropriated Western feminist theories to meet their needs in a modernizing Confucian culture. She illustrates the rise and fall of women's movements against the historical backdrop of the island's contested national identities, first vis-à-vis imperial Japan (1895-1945) and later with postwar China (1945-2000).- Creator

Narrating victimhood
The author explores how people hold their worlds together in terms of religious beliefs, social cohesion, family relations, gender norms, livelihood practices and idioms of roots, relatedness and place. How they incorparate categories like 'history, locality, econimic globalisation or transnational political integration into everyday discourses. And how these categories are made meaningful to local actors in rural Dalmatia. She focuses on continual contestations over truth, history and memory and how these generate narratives of victimhood and shape local identities in Croatia. She examines phenomena such as Marian apparitions, a historic knights tournament, the symbolic re-signification of a massacre site, and the social situation of Croatian war veterans.- Creator

Women and madness
When first published in 1972 this book was the first to address critical questions about women and mental health. Combining interviews with patients with an analysis of women's roles in history, society and myth, Chesler concludes that there is a terrible double standard when it comes to mental health. In this new edition, she addresses many of the most relevant issues to women and mental health today, including eating disorders, social acceptance of antidepressants, addictions, sexuality, postpartum depression and more.- Creator

Elin Wägner's alarm clock
Analyses of the ideas of the Swedish journalist, feminist and literary author Elin Wägner (1882–1949) in a European feminist context, which is presented in terms of three elements. Firstly, German Mathilde Vaerting and her sociology of power were important for Wägner’s theory of matriarchy. Secondly, the influence of Austrian Rosa Mayreder and her theory of masculine civilization and feminine culture are analyzed in relation to Wägner's development of what might be called an early ecological feminism. Thirdly, the Women's Organization for World Order (WOWO) is presented.- Creator

Africa after gender?
The authors address questions such as: What is the meaning of gender in an African context? Why does gender usually connote women? Why has gender taken hold in Africa when feminism hasn’t? Is gender yet another Western construct that has been applied to Africa? They show gender as an applied rather than theoretical tool and discuss themes such as the performance of sexuality, lesbianism, women’s political mobilization, the work of gendered NGOs, and the role of masculinity in a gendered world.- Creator
