Opting back in
The authors revisit women, first interviewed a decade earlier in Pamela Stone’s book 'Opting Out? Why Women Really Quit Careers and Head Home' about taking a career break of high-level jobs to raise children. They talk about the challenges when they return to work. Most succeed, but not in their former white-collar jobs due to the lack of flexibility in hours, but in lower-paid jobs in the gig economy or predominantly female nonprofit sector. An account of the consequences for women seeking to strike a work/life balance, how women can reinvent their careers, and the policy reforms needed in the upper strata of the labour market where patriarchy and capitalism operates.
