'This year’s report on progress towards the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) highlights several milestones. .The target of reducing extreme poverty by half has been reached five years ahead of the 2015 deadline, as has the target of halving the proportion of people who lack dependable access to improved sources of drinking water. Conditions for more than 200 million people living in slums have been ameliorated—double the 2020 target. Primary school enrolment of girls equalled that of boys, and we have seen accelerating progress in reducing child and maternal mortality.'

Trends in maternal mortality
Trends in maternal mortality
The estimates on maternal mortality presented in this report are the sixth in a series of exercises by the United Nations agencies. Considering that only a third of countries are characterized as having a complete civil registration system with good attribution of cause of death, it is imperative that countries with incomplete civil .registration systems take steps to strengthen those systems. This will tremendously improve the estimation of maternal mortality and monitoring of the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) 5: Improve maternal health. The two targets for assessing MDG 5 are reducing the maternal mortality ratio (MMR) by three quarters between 1990 and 2015, and achieving universal access to reproductive health by 2015.

Women’s and children’s rights
Women’s and children’s rights
'Gender equality and the protection of human rights, especially of children and those most vulnerable, are fundamental principles of the United Nations. These rights cut across all aspects of the UN’s work and are crucial to long-term progress, including achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. .Yet in our compartmentalized world, the rights of women and those of children have often been promoted in isolation from one another. Separate international treaties have been forged and specialized UN agencies, government ministries and non-governmental organizations created for whom women or children are the primary focus. The purpose of this advocacy booklet is to explore the human rights links between these two groups, the practical implications of considering them together, and four areas for strategic action.'

'The recommendations on women’s human rights and gender equality presented here have been compiled from two civil society consultations conducted by UN-NGLS in 2013: a teleconference-based consultation that resulted in the report Advancing Regional Recommendations on the Post-2015 Agenda, and an online consultation on four post-2015 reports to the Secretary-General.'

Global study on homicide 2018
In 2017 58 per cent of all femicide victims reported globally, were women killed by intimate partners or family members. This study provides an overview of the scope of gender-related killing of women and girls. It analyses killings perpetrated both within and outside the family sphere. It also considers the profiles of perpetrators of intimate partner killings, the link between lethal and non-lethal violence against women and the criminal justice response. The report was published on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women 2018 to raise awareness, increase understanding and call for action.

Where are the words?
A guide for EU civil society organisations and activists engaged in the women, peace and security (WPS) agenda. It aims at strengthening the organisations' advocacy and understandings of the UN Security .Council and at guarding the UN system for its commitments on the WPS Agenda. The guide shares the key findings of the eponymous report published in May 2020. This report shows that WPS resolutions are not being translated into country-specific resolutions and reveals the need for a new strategy for engagement with the UN Security Council by examining the role and place of the WPS Agenda in international law and practice.

'This Dutch National Action Plan (NAP) for the implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 (UNSCR 1325) on Women, Peace and Security is therefore fully dedicated to the enhancement of female leadership and political leverage in conflict-affected societies. It is a tool for exchange of information and discussion and, above all, a call for joint action.'
