Butterfly politics
Collection of speeches and other writing from Catharine Alice MacKinnon (1946), American feminist, scholar and lawyer. In this book, the author argues that the right seemingly minor interventions in the legal realm can have a butterfly effect that generates major social and cultural transformations. The pieces collected here provide a new perspective on her career as a pioneer of legal theory and practice and an activist for women’s rights. Its central concerns of gender inequality, sexual harassment, rape, pornography, and prostitution have defined her intellectual, legal, and political pursuits for over forty years. The selections all share the same motivation: to end inequality, including abuse, in women’s lives.- Creator

Women and austerity
This volume constitutes an attempt to identify how the economic crisis and the subsequent austerity policies are affecting women in Europe and the US, tracing the consequences for gender equality in employment and welfare systems in nine case studies from countries facing the most severe adjustment problems. The contributions adopt a framework to analyse women in recession, which takes into account changes in women’s position and current austerity conditions. The findings demonstrate that in the immediate aftermath of the financial crisis, employment gaps between women and men declined — but due only to a deterioration in men’s employment position rather than any improvements for women.- Creator

Muslim women in the economy
This book explores the changing role of Muslim women in the economy in the twenty-first century. Sociological developments such as secular education, female-focused policies, national and global commitments to gender equality as well as contemporary technological advances have all served to shift and redefine the domestic and public roles of Muslim women, leading in many places to increases in workplace participation and entrepreneurship. The volume investigates the contexts of these shifts and the experiences of women balancing faith and other commitments to actively engage in the economy in vastly different countries. With cases ranging from Saudi Arabia, Iran, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Indonesia, Nigeria, Kenya through to Spain, Bulgaria and Australia.- Creator
