There have been many years of experience with schemes for training and using traditional birth attendants. There have, however, been several innovative schemes wich have been successful, and more and different approaches needed. This supplement tries to show some of the achievements, and indicates some of the problems which still remain in this connection. Elizabeth Leema provides an overview of the traditional birth attendants (TBA) situation to date. Janet Mutambirwa gives an indepth anthropological study into childbearing practices in Zimbabwe. Claude Egullion gives a detailed description of a TBA training and utilization program in Manicaland, Zimbabwe. The last article covers some approaches and problems of evaluation and data collection from TBAs.
