Words on fire
'Words of fire' is both a biography of Elisabeth Gurly Flynn (1890-1964) and the first collection of Flynn's writings on women. She was one of the greatest orators of her day, was a key organizer of labour strikes for the Industrial Workers of the World (familiar known as Wobblies), a leader of free speech battles, and a major figure in labor defense. She wrote a weekly newspaper column for twenty-six years, as well as political pamphlets, an autobiography, and a jail memoir. One of the founders of the American Civil Liberties Union, she ran for Congress and was the first female chairman of the Communist Party of the United States of America.
