Eroticism, sensuality and 'women's secrets' among the Baganda: A critical analysis
Author focuses on one particular cultural and sexual initiation institution among the Banganda of Uganda, namely the Ssenga, to understand more of African women's sexuality. Among the Banganda Ssenga matters is at once understood to signify an institution that has persisted and endured through centuries as a tradition of sexual initiation. In a controlling position of this elaborate socio-cultural insitution is the paternal aunt (surrogate versions thereof), whose role is to tutor young girls and women in a wide range of sexual matters, including pre-menarche practices, pre-marriage preparation, erotic instruction and reproduction.
