Timely assistance
The Society for Promoting the Training of women (SPEW) has worked to broaden women’s occupational possibilities in the United Kingdom. The history of women’s access to occupations of clerical work, printing, hairdressing, hospitals, plan-tracing and artistic trades in the 19th century is outlined. Later the society has concentrated on providing employment advice and study loans. These activities, the people active in the society in the course of its history and the future of the SPEW are presented.
