The dedicated spiritual life of upper rhine noble women
The book tells the story of Lady Gertrude Rickeldey of Ortenberg (d. 1335), a noble widow who lived a spiritual but secular life and her lifelong companion, Heilke of Staufenberg (d. after 1335). The book describes issues such as the aristocratic household, conversations the women held with their fellow believers and the way they combined their spiritual and secular life. The first part of the book studies the life and work of Gertrude and Heilke, by discussing the documentary and narrative sources available about both women, their historical and educational background and religious formation and their activity as 'heralds of divine love' in Offenburg and Strasbourg. The second part is an English translation of the fourtheenth-century text on which the studies are based.
