Gender practices in the construction of excellence
The scope of this report is on the revealing of gender practices in the construction of academic excellence in recruitment and selection procedures. Core questions for this report are whether the criteria that have been used .play out differently or similarly for male and female candidates, and how constructions of excellence are connected to the reproduction of inequalities in the research system. The construction of excellence is particularly salient for those workers who hold precarious positions, as the label of excellence is the key to their inclusion or exclusion in academia and research. This report presents a comparative analysis across GARCIA beneficiaries in Switzerland, Italy, Iceland, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Slovenia. The analysis is based on national research reports from these countries.- Creator

Academic careers and gender inequality
'Careers in science and academia are still subject to discrimination according to the sex. This becomes visible in .the famous scissor-shaped curve, where one can observe a progressive “evaporation” or disappearance of women as they advance in the career: an occurence, which is called the “leaky pipeline” phenomenon. .This report outlines the map of women and men in scientific/academic careers in Austria, Belgium, Iceland, Italy, The Netherlands, Slovenia, Switzerland and institutes (SSH and STEM fields). It provides a brief transversal analysis of national and organizational data in terms of the leaky pipeline in each studied context. Finally, it suggests some recommendations for tools or implementations that could help in improving the situations described.'- Creator

Selection of measures for integrating gender into research and curricula in six European countries
'This document compiles reports on the measures that the beneficiary organisations in Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Iceland, Switzerland and Slovenia have taken in order to advance integration of gender perspective in research and teaching. The objective of this task was to increase the awareness of the importance of integrating a gender perspective in research and students’ curricula in academia. Though aiming towards common goal, project partners had quite different strategies in conducting this task due to 1) different institutional settings in each of the partner institutions, and 2) estimation of different needs among scientists coming from different field of study. In order to reflect the common objective, and allow basic comparability, the reports have been organised in a similar way: first, presenting the institutional setting and existent practices in integration of gender into the content of research and curricula, then, describing different actions each partner took and providing rationale for chosen strategies, and finally, noting challenges faced in the process of organising and conducting particular activity and reflecting on lessons learned.'- Creator

Experiences of early career researchers/academics: a qualitative research on the leaky pipeline and interrelated phenomena in six European countries
Authors want to provide a comprehensive overview of the 'leaky pipeline' in the different contexts of six GARCIA beneficiaries (Italy, Belgium, The Netherlands, Iceland Switzerland and Slovenia). It is based on a qualitative analysis of more than two hundred interviews conducted among three target sub-groups: movers/leavers, postdocs, and newly tenured.- Creator

Mapping organisational work-life policies and practices
'The purpose of this report is twofold: first, mapping the existing work/life balance policies and programs available in each Garcia beneficiary institutions and universities. Second, pointing out the specific experiences and needs of conciliations expressed by researchers with a temporary position. .The focus are programs and policies designed to help researchers and the scientific personnel of each Garcia institution to balance the responsibilities of their professional and personal lives across various life stages and events such as pregnancy, childbirth, marriage/cohabitation, career/job change, continuous professional development or alternatively illness, stress and anxiety or disability. Particular attention has been paid to the availability of these policies in relation to the nature of the employment contract, e.g. temporary, tenure track or permanent.'- Creator

Gender Dimension in Research and Curriculum
'Collection of reports that map gender dimension in the existing research and curricula, conducted by the GARCIA project partners in the following countries: Belgium, Iceland, Italy, the Netherlands, Slovenia and Switzerland. The reports present qualitative and quantitative analyses of the research projects and curricula conducted during the .year 2013 at two test departments – one from social sciences and humanities field (SSH) and the other from the field of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The reports also include the analysis of the gender structure of the project teams, lecturers and students, if available.'- Creator

Organisational culture and everyday working life
'This report aims to provide an insight into the ways quantitative data from European institutions and research centres intersects with the views and experiences of researchers in the early stages of their careers obtained .through semi-structured interviews. The GARCIA project is targeted towards combating gender inequalities in academia and research centres through the implementation of measures undertaken at cultural and sstructural levels in organisations, with particular focus on researchers in the early stages of their careers and researchers with temporary positions. The report consists of six national reports from Belgium, Iceland, Italy, the Netherlands, Slovenia, and Switzerland).'- Creator

Toward a gendered pipeline typology

Toward a gendered pipeline typology
Authors propose a new Typology of Gendered Pipelines that provides a multi-level, multi-dimensional and comparative analytical framework of leaky pipelines and interrelated phenomena in Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Iceland, Switzerland and Slovenia and research institutions. Along with previous studies and with a number of contemporary European studies, the GARCIA project establishes that the moving away of women from the scientific or academic path, leading to higher positions does not happen so simply as one could imagine at first glance, and that rather than adopting monocausality, we have to take a more composite view of causes and effects when thinking about the “Leaky Pipeline” and other phenomena. When looking at gender policies, under the hood of “gender equality” these have so far also focussed in a rather epidermic way on improving figures and representations in professorships and leadership positions (albeit still without much effect).- Creator

How to prevent human trafficking for domestic servitude in diplomatic households and protect private domestic workers
How to prevent human trafficking for domestic servitude in diplomatic households and protect private domestic workers
'The aim of this handbook is to raise awareness of how host states can regulate and monitor the employment conditions of private domestic workers in diplomatic households. It highlights how protocol departments and similar authorities can prevent exploitation or abuse and what can be done if it occurs. Finding effective responses is a challenge for many countries. Switzerland, like Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, the United States and other host states of international organizations and foreign missions, started to introduce preventive measures some time ago. The need to prevent and respond to employment disputes and to address grievances of private domestic workers, however, has been recognized in other countries too.' -
