Gender equity and male engagement
Gender equity and male engagement
In this report, supported by Cartier Philanthropy, ICRW provides a historical overview of the nearly 40-year-old male engagement field, as well as guidance for stakeholders on how to support the funding, design, and implementation of programming that engages men and boys in transforming gender norms. The insights they offer are drawn from published and grey literature, key informant interviews, and a convening of global experts on male engagement programming for gender equity and women’s empowerment. Specifically, this report details approaches, challenges, and best practices for working with men to achieve gender equity in six sectors: violence against women and girls, health, economic empowerment, care work and fatherhood, land rights and agriculture, and political participation. -

A question of balance
The politics of the hijab and burqa lie at the intersection of the political and legal spheres. Consequently, the political and legal spheres have each attempted to enforce differing versions of the concepts of equality and neutrality. A cross-cultural and cross-national survey of judicial decisions and legislative action in these countries demonstrates how each is balancing individual rights and communal bonds, and adhering to or retreating from previously accepted human rights norms for women and religious practices.- Creator

Mannenemancipatie

In pursuit of equity

In pursuit of equity
Tracing changing ideals of fairness from the 1920s to the 1970s, Kessler-Harris shows how a deeply embedded set of beliefs, or 'gendered imagination', shaped seemingly neutral social legislation to limit the freedom and equality of women. While law and custom generally sought to protect women from exploitation, and sometimes from employment itself, at the same time they assigned the most important benefits to wage work. She shows how ideas about what was fair for men as well as for women influenced old age and unemployment insurance, fair labor standards, Federal income tax policy, and the new discussion of women's rights that emerged after World War II. Only in the 1960s and 70s did this gendered imagination begin to alter.- Creator

Sexual liberation, socialist style
This publication shows how, in the case of Czechoslovakia, important aspects of sexuality were already liberated during the 1950s, (e.g. abortion was legalized, homosexuality decriminalized, the female orgasm came into experts' focus) in the context of gender equality. However, with the coming of Normalization, gender discourses reversed and women were to aspire to be caring mothers and docile wives.- Creator

Eskridge provides an analysis of legal issues concerning gender and sexual nonconformity in the United States. Part I, which covers the years from the post-Civil War period to the 1980s, is a history of state efforts to discipline and punish the behavior of homosexuals and other people considered to be deviant. Part II addresses contemporary issues. The concluding part locates the author's legal arguments within the larger currents of liberal theory and integrates them into a general stance toward freedom, gender equality, and religious pluralism. 1e dr.: 1999.- Creator

The circle of empowerment
The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) is one of the most important human rights tools ever created. Adopted in 1979 by the United Nations General Assembly, it is often described as an international bill of rights for women. These essays and personal reflections, from individuals who have served on the committee that monitors CEDAW, introduce readers to the issues and the activism. .Only a handful of countries have refused to ratify CEDAW: the United States is the only industrialized country among them. This book reveals the profound impact the convention has had on women's lives around the world and its potential to affect American women. With examples and moving reminiscences from Japan to Tunisia to the Caribbean and beyond, this collection addresses CEDAW's impact on women in Islam, labor markets, migration, violence against women, human trafficking, women in politics, and more.- Creator

Changing forms of employment
Economic recessions and periods of growth are manifestations of change which have a direct effect on the experience of employees, households and work organizations. The authors examine these trends which generate pressure towards a reshaping of social institutions in three ways: changes in the organizsation of production, particularly those associated with the growth of service dominated economies: the effects of technological change, particularly those associated with ICT: and the erosion of the 'male breadwinner' (or single earner) model of employment and household.- Creator

All men and women are created equal'
Investigation of the use and function of the proverbial language in the personal relationship between the nineteenth-century feminists Elizabeth Cady Stanton (1815-1902) and Susan B. Anthony (1820-1906), and their vast correspondence, the appearance of the proverbial rhetoric in their many speeches and essays, and their innovative employment of proverbial quotations from such documents as the ‘Declaration of Independence' to further their cause. It also looks at how proverbs in their traditional wording or as innovatively changed pieces of wisdom were used to argue both for equal pay and education of women and to overcome the misogyny of the established church. A final chapter looks at how the Biblical proverb “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you†became a powerful verbal tool to justify their call for equal rights for women. These chapters are followed by an index of proverbs and proverbial expressions that are listed in their contexts with information as to their source and date.- Creator
