Sowing autonomy
The author of this book looks in particular at women’s roles in saving and reproducing seed in the dry lands of the Deccan Plateau, in South India. Detailed farmers’ accounts of why seed-saving is essential emphasise the interconnectedness between self-reliance in seed, crop diversity and nutrition. By extension, the realms of food culture and religious rituals (which entail the use of traditional crops) are also linked to seed autonomy. What is most significant about the intertwining of seed-saving, crop diversity and nutrition is that these three realms are largely under women’s control. However, the processes of industrialisation and institutionalisation in the seed sector are undermining the very basis of autonomous seed production- Creator

Managing diversity
This book can serve as a guide to effective management of a diverse workforce in a global context. It offers information on the new realities of the workforce, including demographic, legislation, and social policy trends around the world. It analyzes the causes and consequences of workforce exclusion, highlighting the groups commonly excluded in various countries. It provides a model of the 'inclusive workplace' suggesting policies, procedures, and programs that facilitates implementation. Gender is only one of the components of workplace diversity, but in many countries the share of women in the labor force is still rising. The book offers theory, statistics, examples and case studies.- Creator

Liberation from liberalization
This book focuses on Southeast Asia and the role the state has played in the economies of Taiwan, Indonesia and the Philippines. While showing that the role of women in the economy has contributed significantly to economic growth, limiting the role of the state under the influence of neo-liberal globalization, particularly with welfare state reduction, has been responsible for growing poverty, especially among women. The book argues in favor of a system that incorporates women's groups into the decision-making process of the state while making sure the state remains both transparent and subject to the political advocacy of its citizens- Creator

It considers how a wide range of policies, including tax/benefit policies, childcare policy, and employment and workplace practices help determine parental labor market outcomes and may impinge on family formation. This volume also includes some options for policy reform towards a better reconciliation of work and family commitments in the four countries in question. -

Comparison of the representation of women earning bachelor's degrees and PhDs in physics and astronomy with the representation of women in other scientific disciplines. Women in Asian management
According to a study by the ILO (2001), women's share of the labour force is increasing worldwide. Today, women's participation rate in the labour force is over 40 per cent of the global workforce. .Higher educational levels and falling fertility rates have contributed to this increased participation. There is also some evidence that women in some Asian countries may be less marginalised in their advancement into top managerial positions than their counterparts elsewhere. .As women become more educated and qualified for managerial positions, the number of Asian women managers and executives is predicted to rise over the next decade. This book examines the opportunities and barriers for women managers in Asia and presents an update on their progress in management.- Creator

This volume examines micro-credit interventions made in India and provides valuable insights into: the role of social mobilization in reducing poverty: the working of community banking programmes at the village level: the efforts to create space for women to carry out credit and savings transactions: the process of empowerment through the formation of women's groups: and the improvement of women's lives through savings and credit activity.- Creator

Female Enterprise in the New Economy

Female Enterprise in the New Economy
Inthis book Hughes examines whether an increasingly entrepreneurial economy offers women better opportunities for economic success, or instead increases their risk of poverty and economic insecurity. Drawing on original data from interviews, statistical research, and other sources, Hughes explores the reasons why women are starting businesses in record numbers. She looks at the type of work that entrepreneurial women are pursuing, the satisfaction they derive from their work, and the economic risks and rewards they face. Placing this study in the context of broader debates on economic restructuring, the emergence of a ‘risk society,’ and growing economic polarization, Hughes illustrates the diversity within women’s self-employment and small business ownership, and the need for policies to better address the particular needs of this sector of the workforce.- Creator

Gender mainstreaming

Gender mainstreaming
The concept of gender mainstreaming has experienced an unexpected boom in the European Union and beyond since the United Nations World Conference of Women in Beijing in 1995. Starting from the evolution of gender mainstreaming, this book examines the extent to which gender mainstreaming can be regarded as an innovation and as an institution in a complex organisation like the European Commission. By ensuring that the effects on both genders of all policies and organisational processes are taken into account, gender mainstreaming seeks to bring what are often marginalised as 'women's concerns' into the mainstream of the analysis. Gender mainstreaming is often regarded as a paradigm shift compared to previous concepts of equal treatment and positive action programmes.- Creator

Class, gender and the vote
The editors of this book set out to show that a quantitative approach to history can help to rectify the problem of New Zealand as a country of many different pasts among groups. The essays they have chosen address some potent themes – class, mobility, gender and how people vote – and also represent some of the work that has been produced by two major research projects: the Caversham Project, initiated by Erik Olssen in the late 1970s and the New Zealand working class conservatism project, founded in 1998 by Miles Fairburn and S.J. Haslett .The book is divided into five sections: class, segregation and religion: class and mobility: class, gender and voting behaviour: class imagery: and a final section on best practice in quantitative historical research.- Creator

To the farthest frontiers
Gender inequality and poverty are pressing issues in most countries across Central and Eastern Europe. The changing relationship between the European Union (EU) and these countries has a considerable effect on them. Gender equality and poverty eradication could be advanced if the EU maintained a commitment to these in its policies and instruments. However, it fails to do so. While the legal framework does feature clear commitments to poverty eradication and gender equality, specific policy instruments and strategies do not carry this through. The report concludes that, for the EU to be a socially responsible global actor, to avoid creating new divisions on the European continent and to contribute to achieving the Millenium Development Goals (MDGs), it must significantly increase its efforts to support gender equality and poverty eradication in its assistance to this region.- Creator

Integrated policies on gender relations, ageing and migration in Europe
This book addresses major societal trends associated with changes in gender relations, familybuilding and patters of work, ageing, and integration of migrants, which mark Europe at the turn of the 21st century. It builds on the networking of 11 European Population institutes from Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, the Netherlands and Poland. The Network for Integrated European Population Studies (NIEPS) took stock of research carried out at the national level and literature produced in a variety of European languages in view to provide the knowledge-base for integrated population-related policies at the European level.- Creator
