Remapping gender in the new global order
This book analyses changes in gender relations, as a result of globalization, in countries on the semi-periphery of power. Semi-periphery refers to those nations which are not drivers of change globally, but have enough economic and political security to have some power in determining their own responses to global forces. Individual countries obviously face challenges that are to some extent unique, although the prescriptions for economic and social restructuring are based on a common competitive logic. .This book draws on examples from four countries on the semi-periphery of power but still located in the top category of the Human Development Index. At one end is Norway, one of the world’s richest and most developed welfare-states, and, at the other, is Mexico, a country that is much poorer and more susceptible to the power of the United States and international agencies. Australia and Canada, the other two semi-peripheral countries examined, are in the middle. Also included are comparisons with the epicentre of the ‘core’ base of power – the United States. .The individual chapters focus on the effect on specific groups of people, including males and indigenous groups.- Creator

Gender and the politics of time
The author examines ideas on the nature and political significance of time and re-frames them from a feminist perspective. Themes covered include gender differences in time use and the impact of 'time poverty' on women's citizenship: the need to value time spent giving and receiving care: the social meanings of time: 'women's time' and 'men's time': the role of the past in framing policy options nowadays.- Creator

Gendering emotions in organisations
This collection explores the connections between gender and emotion in organizations. In its examination of these connections, this book focuses on two specific areas: emotional labour and the gendered nature of the expression of feelings at work. Drawing on a range of empirical data, including new work on the previously neglected area of men and emotions, the book brings together emerging literature on this topic.- Creator

Putting gender back in the picture
The first section of this overview explores the dominant analysis taking hold around women’s economic empowerment and highlights critical issues that remain as yet on the margins of debate and action. It seeks to promote a nuanced understanding of the gendered barriers that prevent some women from benefiting from economic opportunities or from being empowered despite access to these opportunities. It goes on to suggest a practical starting point for overcoming some of these barriers: tackling the ‘double burden’ of paid work and care work that is shouldered by so many women. The second section provides an annotated bibliography of resources related to the issues covered in the overview.- Creator

Women and leadership
Women and Leadership brings together in one volume scholars from a range of disciplines to address the strategies for change involving women and leadership. These experts explore when and how women exercise power and what stands in their way. Despite recent progress women seeking leadership positions face persistent and pervasive barriers. These include gender bias in leadership opportunities, gender inequalities in family responsibilities and inflexibility in workplace structures.- Creator

A critical review of selected time use surveys
This paper was prepared as part of the preparatory phase for the UNRISD research project on Political and Social Economy of Care. The aim of the project is to examine the way in which care is provided and allocated between the family/household, state, market and “community”, and its articulation with the commodity economy in different countries. The country case studies describe the institutional shape of the various “care regimes” and provide micro-level quantitative analysis of how women, men, girls and boys within households “take care” of other household members: and explore the implications of the findings for poverty and social exclusion.- Creator

The political and social economy of care in a develoment context
This paper traces the evolution of ideas in the area of gender and care, and analyses some of the main strands of thinking that have contributed to this ongoing debate. The effort to review the literature is not exhaustive, and it is also biased toward connecting gender analyses of care in developing countries to some of the conceptual and theoretical work on care that, for the most part, takes the developed capitalist economies as its point of reference.- Creator
