Arresting images

Lesbian rule
Villarejo recontextualises the lesbian presence in documentary film. Studded with insights about fetishism, archives, diaspora, and more, she considers a range of films from documentaries about Cuba and lesbian pulp fiction to 'Exile Shanghai' and 'The Brandon Teena Story'. She presents a theoretical exploration of lesbian visibility. Focusing on images of lesbians in film, she analyses what these representations contain and their limits. She combines Marxist theories of value with poststructuralist insights to argue that lesbian visibility operates simultaneously as an achievement and a ruse, a possibility for building a new visual politics and a way of rendering static and contained what lesbian might mean.- Creator

Lesbian Violence as Fascist Crusade in Monster

Lesbian Violence as Fascist Crusade in Monster
Author seeks to explain the configuration of lesbian violence in the film, Monster, by taking as its starting point this updated cinematic rehearsal in terms that rearticulate a materialist feminist advance on the film's particular projection of queerness while engaging a critical theoretical qualification of right-residual tendencies within materialist theory that ideologically cull same-sex love and desire between and for women into a likewise potentially damaging mythification of revolutionary praxis. In this way, the article seeks not to reconnect the divergent psychoanalytic and materialist strands of critical theory.- Creator

Feminist auteurs
Feminist Auteurs examines a rich and diverse body of work that has received insufficient attention both in film studies and in feminist theory on film. Looking at individual films within the context of feminist film as a genre, Ramanathan examines film from diverse cultural traditions, while paying close attention to what might be regarded as feminist in different cultural contexts. The films chosen expand ideas of feminism covering as they do film from Africa, Latin America, Europe, Asia and the US. Interpretations of twenty-four films, both older and contemporary, including Vagabond, India Song, Bhaji on the Beach, Antonia's Line (Marlene Gorris) Chocolat, and Daughters of the Dust lay out a complete framework for reading women's film.- Creator
