The life and times of Stella Browne

The life and times of Stella Browne
Stella Browne’s life was an experiment in new possibilities. Passionately committed to socialism, feminism and the rights of the indvidual, she promoted a radical vision of the sexual reform of society. Hall sets her into the context of her progressive times and friends and associates, including Edward Carpenter, Rebecca West, Havelock Ellis, Dora Russell and Winifred Holtby. She relates how Stella Browne overturned many assumptions about women in the early twentieth century. How at a time when even birth control was barely mentionable, she publicly argued for women’s access to safe abortion, revealed to a government committee that she herself had undergone this then illegal operation, and co-founded the Abortion Law Reform Association. She was a militant suffragette, campaigned for pacifism during the Great War, joined the new British Communist Party then left over its indifference to birth control. She was a dedicated internationalist, perhaps the first British women to speak publicly on lesbianism, and practised what she preached, living the free love she advocated.- Creator

Dutch culture in a European perspective, Volume 3
Originally published in Dutch as '1900: hoogtij van burgerlijke cultuur' (2000). This volume describes the history, cultural patterns and particularities of the Netherlands around the years 1900. It focuses on the rediscovery or reconstruction of the Golden Age, on the Dutch colonial empire in the East Indies and relations with South Africa, on the emancipation of the Roman Catholics after 1853, on the Jewish community in Amsterdam and other cities, and on various Protestant denominations. Attention is paid to the utopian aspects of early socialism and the ideological background of feminism, and to the connection between socialism, mysticism, and symbolic art.- Creator

Gendering postsocialism
This book explores changes in gendered norms and expectations in Eastern Europe and Eurasia after the fall of the Berlin Wall. The dismantlement of state socialism in these regions triggered monumental shifts in their economic landscape, the involvement of their welfare states in social citizenship and their established gender norms and relations, all contributing to the formation of the postsocialist citizen.- Creator

Margaret Storm Jameson
From her childhood in Whitby to her long old age in Cambridge, the life of Margaret Storm Jameson (1891-1986), novelist, autobiographer, and political activist, spanned almost the whole of the twentieth century. In her long life as writer and activist, president of wartime PEN (the association of Poets, Essayist, Novelists) committed to the values of freedom and social justice, she fought to reconcile the conflicting forms of emergent modernity. This biography recovers the aspirations and the disappointments of the generation of socialists that was Class 1914. Alongside the narrative of Jameson's life, and the experiences as daughter, wife, and mother, the book explores her concern with issues of culture and society, cultural memory, and cultural landscapes, her fascination with aesthetic form and the relation of writing to politics, her insight into the materiality of words, and her persistent probing of the nature of the writing subject. It draws on unpublished archive material and brings new research on neglected areas of cultural history into conjunction with literary-critical analyses of Jameson's novels and studies of her journalism and essays. With extensive bibliography of her work.- Creator
