Restrained voices
Description of the role gender plays in prison health care delivery, based on face-to-face interviews of fifty-six women inmates. The results show that women are willing to discuss only physical ailments and are reluctant to speak about mental health care or HIV. While women benefit from health care services in prison, they still feel that a female-oriented approach to health care in general will improve the services.- Creator

Women Police Stations as a Dispute Processing System
In 1992, the Tamil Nadu State government in India began to introduce all-women police stations whose primary role is to deal with crimes against women, including family violence and dowry disputes. Dowry giving is a customary practice in India, which often results in disputes between young wives and their new families. As a result, the young women may be subjected to physical and mental ill treatment. Using detailed data from 474 case records and interviews with 60 dowry victims, this study examines how women police stations serve as a dispute processing system, and describes the services extended by the stations to the victims of dowry disputes.- Creator

The Wounds of Savagery
Descriptive history of the first black woman executed in North Carolina in the twentieth century. Anthropological and criminological discussions of Negro primitivism and gender parity are offered as viable explanations for the paucity of literature that specifically focuses on the manner in which violent black females have been socially constructed as to legitimize their oftentimes harsh punishments in the historic southern justice system.- Creator

Probation officers' views on supervising women probationers
The authors surveyed and interviewed probation officers to examine their perceptions about the special needs of women probationers and explored officers' experiences with women probationers. Probation officers believe women and men on probation have different needs and therefore require different supervision strategies. Results suggest that the multiple problems and challenges female clients present to their officers and the greater emotionality they express in their interactions with officers, often place considerable demands on officers' time, energy and skills.- Creator

Women Prisoners at the Dawn of the 21st Century
The author describes the contemporary experiences of women in prison within the context of the increase in incarceration of specific U.S. populations in the last three decades of the 20th century. She argues that the socially structured conditions of class, race, and gender in the context of globalization, unemployment, and the prison industrial complex help to explain the findings.- Creator
