Charlotte Perkins Gilman
Although best known for her fictional works, especially 'The Yellow Wallpaper' (1892) and 'Herland' (1915), Gilman (1860-1935) wrote numerous nonfictional works reflecting stunningly clear and innovative thinking on a diversity of social, economic, and political issues relating to gender, race, and class. Ceplair presents a chronological compilation of many of these writings, including chapters from her books, articles from the monthly magazine The Forerunner (which she edited and published between 1909 and 1916), and her cross-country lectures, juxtaposed with background information on her life and work. This publication complements Ann J. Lane's The Charlotte Perkins Gilman Reader: 'The Yellow Wallpaper' and Other Fiction ( LJ 9/15/80), integrates the work by and about Gilman, and offers a bibliography of works on American women's history.
