Slachtofferhulp: an analysis of the Amsterdam police department's response to lesbian domestic violence
'Author examines the role that the Amsterdam Police Department plays in the context of lesbian domestic violence and the taboos surrounding lesbian domestic violence, perceptions of how the police are handling such cases, and asks who should be initiating discussions. Author look specifically at the way the Amsterdam Police Department networks Roze in Blauw and the Domestic Violence Unit address the reporting and underreporting of abusive cases amongst lesbians. She provides the opinions and insights of police officers, LGBT therapists, researchers, and LGBT community members and analyzes what the Amsterdam Police has done in the past, what they are doing now, and what can be done in the future to address the specific needs of lesbians affected by domestic violence. The police have acknowledged that this is an issue they should be working on, but have not yet found the best way to spread awareness and handle the cases that come in. If Amsterdam can figure out a way to make this subject less taboo and more talked about, perhaps the rest of the Netherlands, Europe, and the world can keep the conversation flowing and break the silence surrounding lesbian domestic violence. The Impacts and Implications of Physically Focused Dutch Domestic Violence Campaigns
'Specifically, psychological and feminist theoretical frameworks were used from a national Dutch domestic violence campaign debuted in 2012 to determine the situation and treatment of domestic violence and long-term psychological effects in the Netherlands. Interviews with experts of domestic violence and one oral history with a survivor of domestic violence, the perceptions of mental health, domestic violence, and the intersection of the two were explored. There was agreement between literature, experts, and the survivor that mental health is not very valued and respected in Dutch society, as well as that domestic violence continues to remain a taboo subject. However, when the intersection is considered, there is a discrepancy: literature and experts perceive that there has been an increase in awareness and knowledge this intersection over the past ten years and resultantly, the psychology of survivors is well understood and valued.: the experience of the survivor shows this is not always true. The lack of knowledge is argued to be a direct effect and perpetuation of the physically-focused awareness campaigns. Suggestions for getting out of this problematic cycle are offered.'- Creator
