LOVA 35: ethnographies of gender and the body (anniversary edition)
In this anniversary edition to celebrate the 35th jubilee of LOVA the focus is on etnographies of gender and the body. Irma Beusink presented a paper at he LOVA conference in Amsterdam, July 2014, using metaphors to analyze differences within feminisms and their translations into the governmental policies and political statements of indigenous women's organizations in Bolivia. Breast cancer is the second most frequent cancer in the world and a mastectomy is the main method of treatment. Mastectomized women must reconstruct the way that they express their femininity and the symbols that identify them. In El Salvador significant changes in social life have occurred due to the levels of violence that the maras, or transnational street gangs, have generated. How adolescent women living in mara-controlled territories associate themselves with the maras and how their associations impact their sexuality and life strategy choices are discussed by Edith Yesenia Pena Sánches en Mónica Paola Zúniga Escobar. Authors describe the corporeality of an ethnographic view of morbid obesity, technoscience and identity by analyzing the story of a woman with morbid obesity in Mexico City. Anorexia nervosa as a health problem shows a prevalence of 0.5 to 5% in Mexico and it is mainly shown in adolescent and young adult women. In his paper Matthew W Maycock shows certain forms of competition and the denial of pain, both of which are integral to being rickshaw drivers, in light of their implications for masculine bodies and performances. The last 10 years has seen an increase in traditional bride abduction (ukuthwala) cases in South Africa. Recent cases share the common element of sexual violence of under-aged girls by much older men, or even groups of men. Diana Dubrovska takes a look at female sex tourism in the Caribbean and Latin America. In her paper Heather Tucker considers the contemporary Euro-American and European interests and outrage over the 'barbarity' of anti-homosexuality legislation in countries in Africa. Ourania Tsiakalou pays attention to the massive detentions of trans women that took place in Greece as well as some other instances of transphobia, as it was presented in the media and in the public sphere.- Creator

Dark designs and visual culture
Michele Wallace burst into public consciousness with the 1978 publication of Black Macho and the Myth of the Superwoman, a pioneering critique of the misogyny of the Black Power movement and the effects of racism and sexism on black women. Since then, Wallace has produced an extraordinary body of journalism and criticism engaging with popular culture and gender and racial politics. This collection brings together more than fifty of the articles she has written over the past fifteen years. Included alongside many of her best-known pieces are previously unpublished essays as well as interviews conducted with Wallace about her work. Dark Designs and Visual Culture charts the development of a singular, pathbreaking black feminist consciousness.- Creator

Sisterhood and after
History of the UK Women's Liberation Movement. Oral history testimonies power the work, tracing the arc of a feminist life from 1950s girlhoods to late life activism today. The author uses oral history as creative method, making significant use of ‘Sisterhood and After: The Women's Liberation Oral History Project’ to animate still-unresolved controversies of race, class, sexuality, disability, and feminist identity. She provides insight into iconic actions including the Miss World Protest, the fight to protect abortion rights, and the peace protest at Greenham Common. She also explores men's violence and today's demands for trans-liberation as areas of continuing feminist concern.- Creator

Marcia Muller and the female private eye
In 1977, Marcia Muller invaded the all-male domain of detective literature and within a decade was established as the mother of the female hardboiled private eye. She is now the author of four detective series, including the critically acclaimed Sharon McCone series of more than two dozen novels. This collection critically assesses Marcia Muller's writing and reevaluates current critical views on women's detective fiction in general. In the first two of the book's three sections, essays explore Muller's engagement with modern and postmodern feminism, ethnicity, and the socially underprivileged. The third section focuses on one of Muller's major themes, the trauma of history. Drawing from the feminist, historicist, mythic, psychoanalytic, and cultural approaches found in all three sections, the conclusion offers a panoramic perspective on Muller's accomplishments.- Creator

Gendered intersections
Following the structure of the first edition of Gendered Intersections, this second edition examines the intersections across and between gender, race, culture, class, ability, sexuality, age and geographical location from the perspectives of academics, artists and activists. Using different mediums — academic research, poetry, statistics, visual essays, fiction, emails and music — this collection explores gender through issues such as Aboriginal self-governance, poverty, work, spirituality, globalization and community activism. This new edition brings a greater focus on politics, and gender and the law. It also includes access to a Gendered Intersections website, which contains several performances by poets and a Gendered Intersections Quiz, which highlights the historical and contemporary contributions of women and non-hegemonic men to Canadian society.- Creator

The family flamboyant
The Family Flamboyant is a graceful and lucid account of the many routes to family formation. Weaving together personal experience and political analysis in an examination of how race, gender, sexuality, class, and other hierarchies function in family politics, Marla Brettschneider draws on her own experience in a Jewish, multiracial, adoptive, queer family in order to theorize about the layered realities that characterize families in the United States today. Brettschneider uses critical race politics, feminist insight, class-based analysis, and queer theory to offer a distinct and distinctly Jewish contribution to both the family debates and the larger project of justice politics. .'The Family Flamboyant is a spirited testimony to the richness and multiplicity of family life, and a model of how reflections on one's own experience and scholarship can illuminate one another to mutual advantage.- Creator

Minorities within minorities
This book advances our understanding of minority rights by focusing on conflicts that arise within minority groups and by examining the different sorts of responses that the liberal state might have to these conflicts. Groups around the world are increasingly successful in maintaining or winning autonomy. In light of this trend, a crucial question emerges: what happens to individuals within groups who find that their group discriminates against them?- Creator

Growing a race
Cecily Devereux reconsiders the extent to which McClung's enduring legacy of crusading for women's rights is founded on the ideas of British eugenicists such as Francis Galton and Caleb Saleeby and implicated in the passage of eugenical legislation in Canada. In a critical study of Painted Fires, the Pearlie Watson books, and several short stories, Devereux attempts to understand McClung's fiction in terms of its engagement with a politics of 'race' and nation and constructions of specifically 'racial' impurities that many women saw themselves as uniquely able to 'cure.'- Creator

The contributors focus on race, gender, sexuality and justice in the work of William Edward Burghardt Du Bois (1868-1963). They investigate political formulations and rhetorical strategies by which Du Bois approached, used and repressed issues of gender and sexuality.- Creator
