Nostalgia or perversion?
This book presents an interdisciplinary approach to an aspect of Gothic texts, films, and music: that of rewriting. From the eighteenth-century Gothic novel to present-day vampire films and Goth music, the genre is characterised by its nostalgic reflection on past worlds, narratives, and identities. Gothic nostalgia is often accompanied by a transgressive drive, resulting in perversions of the rewritten past—the modern vampire is no longer embodied evil but an attractive dandy, while Goth subcultures reflect on Victorian aesthetics but pervert them by adding fetishist elements. This book brings together the early Gothic novel, present-day female and black Gothic literature, Goth subculture and music, and the imagery of horror films and comic books, thus broadening the definition of ‘Gothic’ from a literary genre to a gesture of pervasive cultural criticism.- Creator

Gender and sexuality in African literature and film
State of present knowledge on (homo)sexuality in African literature and film. The contributors describe the need to separate sex from gender, the correlation between gender and sex as categories of human identities, and between gender and creative artistic practices. They look at characterization, textual and filmic structure and plot in terms of identification. The contributors examine among others: the prevailing views on gender and sexuality, differences of viewpoint between literature and film, the evolution of human sexuality throughout African history, and the role of genre and race.- Creator

Gender in modernism
Selection of texts published since the publication of 'The Gender of Modernism' (record 31115). The works have been grouped into twenty-one thematic sections, with theoretical introductions to the primary texts. The selections explore continental modernism and moves on to colonial and postcolonial sites. They deal with the intersections of gender with an array of social identifications, including global location, ideas of race, passing, the queering of sexualities, medicine, and experiences of trauma and war.- Creator

A 'belle epoque?'
The Third Republic, known as the ‘belle époque’, was a period of lively, articulate and surprisingly radical feminist activity in France, borne out of the contradiction between the Republican ideals of liberty, equality and fraternity and the reality of intense and systematic gender discrimination. Yet, it also was a period of intense and varied artistic production, with women disproving the critical nearconsensus that art was a masculine activity by writing, painting, performing, sculpting, and even displaying an interest in the new 'seventh art' of cinema. This book explores all these facets of the period, weaving them into a complex, multi-stranded argument about the importance of this rich period of French women’s history.- Creator
