The everyday policing of women with romantic codefendants
In a multi-site ethnographic study of women offenders in drug treatment, we identified a subsample of women whose 'codefendants' were also their romantic partners. However, relationships between women and their romantic codefendants are only partially described in existing studies of crime partners, codefendants, and battered women. Romantic codefendant relationships are conditioned by law enforcement efforts and the social control and surveillance which romantic partners exert in the home, on the street, and in jail and prison. Living in everyday policed states, women with romantic codefendants face significant barriers to accessing drug treatment as an alternative to incarceration.
