A rights-based approach to realizing the economic and social rights of poor and marginalized women
This report brings together lessons learned of six projects that applied a rights-based approach to development. Using different strategies to fulfill different rights – to food, livelihood, education, work, housing, freedom from sexual harassment and overall development – eight organizations from five states in India (Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttaranchal and West Bengal) worked to protect and promote the rights of women and girls who face significant violations of their rights.. .This report on lessons learned from these six projects has highlighted a range of economic, social, cultural and political rights (as entrenched in national and international legal instruments) that must be recognized and respected for social justice and social change to be realized. It also makes clear that the pursuit of one or more of the objectives of a rightsbased approach by the six partners has helped pave the way for enhancing the strategies and outcomes of the approach as a whole. The eight organizations involved in this project articulated, defined, refined and questioned the viability of a rights-based approach to development. They did so in the contexts of each respective project, and they identified various outcomes that such an approach creates for their own work. It is hoped that this report will pave the way to an enriched debate on and increased use of a rights-based approach to development, particularly with regard to its benefits for poor and marginalized people around the world.

This handbook combines development of rights awareness with issue-oriented actions. The manual includes substantive information about the human rights of women in such areas as violence, health, reproduction and sexuality, education, the global economy, the workplace, and family life. Each chapter connects the discussion to the provisions of CEDAW (the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women) and to the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and other international agreements. .The book provides tools for women and men to examine critically the framework of human rights. The manual encourages readers to make connections among different sets of human rights and different constituencies. Activities feature interactive methodologies such as discussion, role-play, story-telling, and creative expression in art and music to relate human rights principles to women's personal experience.
