- Description
- Themes of embodiment and agency have long been central to feminist philosophical thought and have increasingly led feminists to extend their theorizing to encompass a range of identities shaped by processes of gender, race, class, disability, and sexuality. The intersection of these themes, however, has often been limited to analyzing how specific modes of socialized embodiment can be impediments to agency or autonomy. .This book brings together a range of theoretical perspectives and resources to the project in ways that stress possibilities as well as constraints. Contributors utilize phenomenology, psychoanalysis, care ethics, analytic philosophy, Hegelian critique, and postcolonial theory to examine embodiment and agency in contexts ranging from a child's struggle to find her own identity to global politics. Part I of this book explores how we become individually and collectively identified subjects through the possibilities for agency that arise from specific modes of embodiment. Part II continues the theme of embodied agency in contemporary sociopolitical contexts. It reconceptualizes the links between embodiment and moral agency in ways adequate to political realities, personal relationships, and collective responsibilities.

- Description
- This book takes on fundamental questions at the intersections of gender, sexuality, and the body. Several questions frame the volume: How does studying gender and sexuality expand and enrich our understanding of Muslim-majority countries, historically and at present? How does the embodiment of ’Muslim’ identity get reconfigured in the context of twenty-first-century globalism? What analytical questions are raised about ’Islam’ when its diverse meanings and multifaceted expressions are closely examined? What roles do gender and sexuality play in the construction of cultural, religious, nationalistic, communal, and militaristic identities? How have power struggles been signified in and on the bodies of women and sexuality?

- This volume contains current issues of embodiment and related aspects such as identity, gender, disability or sexuality, discussed on the basis of examples from contemporary culture and social life. Inspired by Donna Haraway’s concept of the cyborg as a transgressor of boundaries, the book examines fluidity of post-human bodies including cyber relations to others and to self and dis/utopian fantasies offered by literary texts.

With contributions of among others Geertje Mak, Halleh Ghorashi, Francisca de Haan, Berteke Waaldijk, Garjan Sterk, Saskia Bonjour and Annemarie Mol, the book shows how certain concepts such as body, intimacy, migration, intersectionality and masculinity travel within academic culture across the Low countries and find a home in individual research practices.

- Description
- This book provides the readers with the most influential essays that have defined the field of American girls' history and culture. Girl-centered research is critical for a fuller understanding of women and gender, a deeper consideration of childhood and adolescence, and a greater acknowledgment of the significance of generation as a historical force in culture and society. Bringing together work from top scholars of women and youth, the book addresses topics ranging from diary writing and toys to prostitution and slavery. Covering girlhood and the relationships between girls and women, the volume tackles themes such as education, work, play, sexuality, consumption, and the body. The reader also illuminates broader nineteenth-century developments—including urbanization, industrialization, and immigration--through the often-overlooked vantage point of girls. As these essays collectively suggest, nineteenth-century girls wielded relatively little political or social power but carved out other spaces of self-expression.

- This book demonstrates how fiction and medicine have a tradition of looking towards each other for inspiration in questions of gender. Medical textbooks and pamphlets have cited fictional plots and characterisations as a way of communicating complex or 'sensitive' ideas. Essays explore historical accounts of clinical procedures, the relationship between gynaecology and psychology, and cultural conceptions of motherhood, fertility, and the female organisation through a broad range of texts including Henry More's Pre-Existency of the Soul (1659), Charlotte Brontë's Villette (1855), and Eve Ensler's Vagina Monologues (1998).

- Gender inequality persists in most countries. This collection highlights patterns of behaviour and gender relations and locates women at the centre of a dialogue and presents key interventions in gender and race matters. For the contributors, gender serves as an analytical framework and covers the experiences of women in different global settings related to education, political activism, corporeal violence, identity, sexuality, and poverty. The use of poetry and literature provides a powerful voice for women against exclusion and recognises their contribution to society.

- From portrayals of African women’s bodies in early modern European travel accounts to the relation between celibacy and Indian nationalism to the fate of the Korean “comfort women” forced into prostitution by the occupying Japanese army during the Second World War—the essays collected in Bodies in Contact demonstrate how a focus on the body as a site of cultural encounter provides essential insights into world history. Together these essays reveal the “body as contact zone” as a powerful analytic rubric for interpreting the mechanisms and legacies of colonialism and illuminating how attention to gender alters understandings of world history. . .Bodies in Contact brings together articles on colonial gender studies gathered from journals around the world. Breaking from approaches to world history as the history of “the West and the rest,” the contributors offer a multi-centered perspective. They examine aspects of imperial regimes including the Ottoman, Mughal, Soviet, British, Han, and Spanish, over six hundred years—from the fifteenth century through the mid-twentieth. Discussing subjects as diverse as slavery and travel, ecclesiastical colonialism and military occupation, marriage and property, nationalism and football, immigration and temperance, Bodies in Contact puts women, gender, and sexuality squarely at the center of the “master narratives” of imperialism and world history.

- Luce Irigaray is an influential philosopher and theorist in the field of feminist thought, and her work is considered both revolutionary and controversial. This volume offers a critical assessment of the relation of her early critical and poetic writings to her later political and practical philosophy. Contributors examine how the question of sexual difference has unfolded in a wealth of different directions in Irigaray's later work, focusing on the areas of nature and technology, social and political theory and praxis, ethics, psychoanalysis, and phenomenology. They also address whether there has been a radical conceptual 'turn' in Irigaray's thought by exploring the idea of a 'turn' as a return to themes that have concerned her all along. The essays contend that Irigaray's writings should be read, criticized, or promoted within the context of her overall philosophical project.

- In Women Artists at the Millennium, artists, art historians, and critics examine the differences that feminist art practice and critical theory have made in late twentieth-century art and the discourses surrounding it. In 1971, when Linda Nochlin published her essay 'Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?' in a special issue of Art News, there were no women's studies, no feminist theory, no such thing as feminist art criticism: there was instead a focus on the mythic figure of the great (male) artist through history. Since then, the 'woman artist' has not simply been assimilated into the canon of 'greatness' but has expanded art-making into a multiplicity of practices with new parameters and perspectives. In Women Artists at the Millennium artists reflect upon their own varied practices and art historians discuss the innovative work of such figures as Louise Bourgeois, Lygia Clark, Mona Hatoum, and Carrie Mae Weems. And Linda Nochlin considers changes since her landmark essay and looks to the future, writing.

- This book explores how adolescent girls come to understand themselves as female in this culture. It illuminates the everyday realities of adolescent girls and the real issues that concern them, rather than what adult researchers think is important to adolescent girls. The contributing authors take seriously what girls have to say about themselves and the places and discursive spaces that they inhabit daily. Rather than focusing on girls in the classroom, the book explores adolescent female identity in a myriad of kid-defined spaces both in-between the formal design of schooling, as well as outside its purview--from bedrooms to school hallways to the Internet to discourses of cheerleading, race, sexuality, and ablebodiness. These are the geographies of girlhood, the important sites of identity construction for girls and young women.

- Description
- This is an academic book written on women and body hair, which has been seen until now as too trivial, ridiculous or revolting to write about. Even feminist writers or researchers on the body have found remarkably little to say about body hair, usually ignoring it completely. It would appear that the only texts to elaborate on body hair are guides on how to remove it, medical texts on ‘hirsutism’, or fetishistic pornography on ‘hairy’ women. The Last Taboo also questions how and why any particular issue can become defined as ‘self-evidently’ too silly or too mad to write about. Using a wide range of thinking from gender theory, queer theory, critical and literary theory, history and anthropology the contributors argue that body hair plays a central role in masculinity and femininity and cultural and sexual identities.

- Debates about and insurgencies against female circumcision are symptoms of a disease emanating from a mindset that produced hierarchies of humans, conquered colonies, and built empires. The mindset finds its articulation at points of coalescence. Female circumcision provided a point of coalescence and impetus for the articulation. Insisting that the hierarchy on which the imperialist project rests is not bipolar but multi-layered and more complex, the contributions show how imperialist discourses complicate issues of gender, race, and history. Nnaemeka gives voice to the silenced and marginalized, and creates space for them to participate in knowledge construction and theory making.

- This book questions the fact that social work education often fails to incorporate gender, even though most of the people that use social work services are women, a majority of social workers are women, and women have had throughout history a significant role in the establishment of social work. The profession of social work started to emerge early in the twentieth century, when femininity was constructed in a way that supported the public/private division. This applied, in particular, to a woman’s body and her appearance, to her morality, sexuality and motherhood, which in turn determined her social opportunities. Social work played a role in these processes in various ways, depending on the prevailing beliefs about women and femininity.

- The book explores women's resistance against the policing of sexuality in Muslim societies. Many Muslim majority countries still use religious discourse to enforce stigmatization and repression of those who do not conform to sexual norms. In this context, Islam is often stigmatized in Western discourse for being intrinsically restrictive with respect to women's rights and sexuality. This collection shows that conservative Muslim discourse does not necessarily match practices and that women's empowerment is facilitated where indigenous and culturally appropriate strategies are developed. Using case studies from Pakistan, Iran, Indonesia, China, Bangladesh, Israel, and India, it argues that Muslim religious traditions do not necessarily lead to conservative agendas but can promote emancipatory standpoints.

- Description
- This new edition of Women's Realities, Women's Choices introduces readers to the field of women's studies by examining the contradictions between social and cultural 'givens' and the realities that women face in society. Written collectively by nine authors from as many fields and disciplines, the book acknowledges the gap between women's realities and their choices--and both analyzes that gap and looks at ways to bridge it. Boxes and pictures contain new information. The book also highlights the impact of the post-Soviet world and economic globalization on women's lives, as well as the feminist issues of the 1990s and early twenty-first century. Chapter references have been updated to include not only films but also web sites.

- Description
- This book illustrates girls' centrality to major twentieth-century forces such as immigration, labor, feminism, and consumerism. Themes in this pioneering volume include girls' use of fashion and music, their roles as workers, their friendships, and new ideas about girls' bodies. While girls in the twentieth century found new avenues for personal ambition and self-expression, especially at school and in the realm of leisure and popular culture, they continued to wrestle with traditional ideas about feminine identity, socialization, and sexuality.

- Description
- Antoinette Fouque cofounded the Mouvement de Libération des Femmes (MLF) in France in 1968 and spearheaded its Psychanalyse et Politique, a research group that informed the cultural and intellectual heart of French feminism. The essays in this volume allow English-speaking readers to access the breadth of Fouque's work. Fouque recounts her experiences running the first women's publishing house in Europe: supporting women under threat, such as Aung San Suu Kyi, Taslima Nasrin, and Nawal El Saadaoui and serving as deputy in the European Parliament. Her theoretical explorations discuss the ongoing development of feminology, she also warns against the trends of counterliberation: the feminization of poverty, the persistence of sexual violence, and the rise of religious fundamentalism.
