- Description
- The late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries witnessed significant developments in the structure, organization, and expansion of financial markets and opportunities for investment in Britain and its empire. This book explores the growing importance of women within investment markets. These findings open up dialogues between economic and financial historians with social, gender, and feminist historians, and add a significant new dimension to existing research on women's economic agency. The volume also breaks fresh ground by analysing aspects of wealth holding and finance in British colonial settings: Canada and Australia.

- Description
- Competing claims on time in work and family life have become inherent, unavoidable features of the Western world. Many people feel torn between work and family not just because their households increasingly juggle competing responsibilities, but also as job expectations and parenting standards have intensified. This book aims to deepen our understanding of a variety of conditions that influence the successes and difficulties experienced in attempting to equally accommodate both work and private lives. The contributors argue that conditions which create competing claims on time can originate from the organization, from the household, or from both: the contributors thus apply a multi-level and multi-actor approach to the problem. They pay detailed attention to time use and time pressures, and focus not only on the causes of disturbed balances between work and care, but also on solutions to these competing claims. This study gives perspectives from across Europe, US, and Australia.

- Description
- This book explores the changing role of Muslim women in the economy in the twenty-first century. Sociological developments such as secular education, female-focused policies, national and global commitments to gender equality as well as contemporary technological advances have all served to shift and redefine the domestic and public roles of Muslim women, leading in many places to increases in workplace participation and entrepreneurship. The volume investigates the contexts of these shifts and the experiences of women balancing faith and other commitments to actively engage in the economy in vastly different countries. With cases ranging from Saudi Arabia, Iran, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Indonesia, Nigeria, Kenya through to Spain, Bulgaria and Australia.

- Description
- For much of the twentieth century, women lagged behind men in their educational attainment. However, in recent decades, young women have become an important source of human capital for labor markets in modern societies, as well as potential competitors to the male workforce. This book asks whether or not women have been able to convert their educational success into gains on the labor market. The contributors address the topic on a comparative level with discussions centred on gendered school-to-work transitions and gendered labor market outcomes. Thereafter they analyze the country-specific implications of the gender redress from a wide range of countries .
