- Description
- Framing the West argues that photography was intrinsic to British territorial expansion and settlement on the northwest coast. Williams shows how male and female settlers used photography to establish control over the territory and its indigenous inhabitants, as well as how native peoples eventually turned the technology to their own purposes. Photographs of the region were used to stimulate British immigration and entrepreneuralism, and imagies of babies and children were designed to advertise the population growth of the settlers. Although Indians were taken by Anglos to document their 'disappearing' traditions and to show the success of missionary activities, many Indians proved receptive to photography and turned posing for the white man's camera to their own advantage. This book will appeal to those interested in the history of the West, imperialism, gender, photography, and First Nations/Native America.

- Description
- In this book the fur trade is examined not simply as an economic activity but as a social and cultural complex that continued for nearly two centuries. Marriages of fur traders to Indian women created bonds that helped advance trade relations. As a result there emerged a unique society derived from both Indian and European culture. Gradually mixed-blood women took their positions in fur-trade society as they possesed the ideal qualifications for a fur trader's wife. In a society where marriage defined a woman's position, white women felt threatened by the presence of acculturated native women against whom they might have to compete for husbands. White women emerged as agents of racism seeking to protect their social status. The author pieced together information from extensive collections of traders' journals, letters, and wills, examining historica evidence in the broader context of social relevance.

- Description
- The traditional mythology of the West is dominated by male images: the fur trader, the Mountie, the missionary, the miner, the cowboy, the politician, the Chief. This collection aims to re-examine the West through women's eyes. It draws together contributions from different disciplines and seeks to create dialogue across geographic, cultural, and disciplinary boundaries, ranging from essays to poetry. By rewriting the West from the perspective of women, the contributors complicate traditional narratives of the region's past by contesting historical generalizations, thus transcending the myths and 'frontier' legacies that emerged out of imperial and masculine priorities and perspectives.
