- Description
- 'Based on employee pipeline data from 132 companies, two broad themes emerge this year: .1 ) On average, women are promoted and hired at lower rates than men, so far fewer women become senior leaders. .(2) At more senior levels, we see women shift from line to staff roles, so very few end up on the path to becoming CEO. .Despite modest progress since 2015, women remain underrepresented in the corporate pipeline. At every step, the representation of women declines, and this does not appear to be the result of company-level attrition. On average, the women and men in this study are leaving their organizations at about the same rate.'

- Description
- 'This report presents the current situation and trends as regards women's and men's engagement in political, economic and social decision-making in the period from 2003 to 2014. It aims to highlight the gender gaps in leadership positions and to identify areas of decision-making where notable progress was made. The report provides a brief review of the EU policy context and research on factors that support or hinder women’s representation in decision-making. The analysis of data is based on the 18 indicators on political and economic decision-making endorsed by the Council in 1999, 2003 and 2008. The analysis is then extended to consider certain general trends in decision-making in other areas, such as academia and research institutions, media and sports organisations, where comparable data are available. It also presents examples of initiatives taken by the Member States to promote women’s participation in leadership positions.'

- Description
- 'With an aging population and declining productivity growth, Europe faces serious challenges to raising its output growth. Adding to these challenges are the various gender gaps in the labor market. Despite significant progress in recent decades, there are still fewer women than men participating in Europe’s labor market, and women are more likely to work part time. Furthermore, a smaller share of women reaches the top rungs of the corporate ladder. .Against this backdrop, this paper investigates the drivers of female labor force participation in Europe as well as what effects greater gender diversity in senior corporate positions might have for Europe’s economic performance. Reexamining the factors driving women’s labor force participation is particularly important because in many European countries the process of closing the gender gap has stalled despite greater gender equality in human capital investment, declining birth rates, changing social norms, and equal legal access to employment opportunities. .For women in Europe the decision to work is not simply a matter of personal choice—policies matter, too. .More women in the labor force paves the way for increased diversity in senior corporate positions and better firm performance. The empirical evidence suggests a strong positive association between firms’ gender diversity in senior positions and corporate financial performance.'

- Description
- Women in the Workplace 2017 is a study of the state of women in corporate America. This research is part of a long-term partnership between McKinsey & Company and LeanIn.Org to give organizations the information they need to promote women’s leadership and foster gender equality. In 2017 222 companies employing more than 12 million people shared their pipeline data and completed a survey of HR practices. In addition, more than 70,000 employees completed a survey designed to explore their experiences regarding gender, opportunity, career, and work-life issues. We also interviewed women from different races and ethnicities at all levels in their organization. The 2017 findings build on reports from 2016 and 2015, as well as similar research conducted by McKinsey & Company in 2012. Since 2012, more than 350 companies have participated— many for multiple years—and close to 200,000 employees have been surveyed.

- 'The purpose of this thesis is not only to gain an understanding of what is known as the glass ceiling, but also to make recommendations for future female leaders on how to be successful, as well as for organizations that wish to increase their percentage of women at the top. First, the research evidence on barriers that constitute the glass ceiling is reviewed, of which four categories emerge: stereotypes, the old boy network, female modesty, and the family. Next, the literature concerning the relationship between gender and leadership is assessed. The literature review serves as a foundation for the evaluation of the results of the qualitative study, which is the second part of this thesis.'

- Description
- Authors investigate the association between female leadership, work organization practices and perceived gender discrimination within firms. Using data for 30 European countries for the period 1995-2010, authors find that having a female “boss” is associated with lower overall gender discrimination at work. The female boss effect, however, differs across gender: it is associated with lower discrimination among female employees, but higher .among male employees. Authors also investigate the underlying mechanisms that shape gender discrimination within firms. Authors find evidence of a “women helping women” pattern through spill-over effects which reduce discrimination among women, but increase discrimination among men, particularly in female-dominated jobs. A better balance between work and life, a supportive work environment and flexible working time, particularly for women in high-skilled jobs, are shown to be effective in reducing gender discrimination. The above findings are .robust to a number of specification changes and different sub-populations in our sample. .Further, similar results are found when more traditional measures of gender imbalance, such as wages or career prospects, are used. Finally, to account for potential endogeneity and selection, arising from the non-random distribution of females in higher-rank jobs, authors jointly estimate the selection process and the discrimination equation, finding support for a causalinterpretation of the results

- Description
- The report is the fifth review of the overall developments at EU level related to the 12 areas .of concern as mentioned in the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (BPfA), at the United Nations World Conference on Women, 4-15 September 1995. The report focuses particularly on trends and developments observed from 2013 to March 2019, with exceptions such as the coming into force of the Work–Life Balance Directive or the elections to the European Parliament (May 2019). The review also reflects on the progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by all UN Member States in 2015. These include a specific SDG related to gender equality (SDG 5). .The executive summary highlights key findings on five themes: gender inequalities in the economy: gender-responsive public infrastructure, social protection and services: freedom from gender-based violence, stereotypes and stigma: parity democracy, accountability and gender-responsive institutions: peaceful and inclusive societies.

- Description
- Authors propose a new Typology of Gendered Pipelines that provides a multi-level, multi-dimensional and comparative analytical framework of leaky pipelines and interrelated phenomena in Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Iceland, Switzerland and Slovenia and research institutions. Along with previous studies and with a number of contemporary European studies, the GARCIA project establishes that the moving away of women from the scientific or academic path, leading to higher positions does not happen so simply as one could imagine at first glance, and that rather than adopting monocausality, we have to take a more composite view of causes and effects when thinking about the “Leaky Pipeline” and other phenomena. When looking at gender policies, under the hood of “gender equality” these have so far also focussed in a rather epidermic way on improving figures and representations in professorships and leadership positions (albeit still without much effect).

- 'The Gender Review discusses global and regional trends in achieving parity in education access, participation and completion and in selected learning outcomes, stressing that there is much room for progress. It then shifts to an evidence-based discussion of relationships between education, gender and sustainable development by discussing work, civic and political engagement and leadership, as well as health and well-being. It concludes with ways forward: what action is implied by evidence and data for achieving more gender-equal societies and how progress towards such societies is to be measured.'
