DescriptionIn this chapter the authors examine the relevant provisions of the various human rights treaties that were, or potentially can be invoked by lesbians and gay men to safeguard their rights and dignity. They focus primarily on developments at the supranational European level. Special attention is paid to the European Commission and Court of Human Rights, both established under the European Convention of Human Rights(ECHR) on the one hand: and, on the other, the statements adopted by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and the European Parliament. They discribe the various patterns of discrimination against lesbians and gay man in Europe in conjunction with the human rights of samesex lovers under the European legislation.
