DescriptionAuthor examines the role of the First Lady. The origine of the term itself is questionable. According to Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary it came into usage in 1863 to describe Mary Todd Lincoln. But others say the term became popular because of a comedy in 1911 about Dolley Madison called 'The First Lady in the Land'.
