DescriptionThe pre-war years, the poverty and the transition period have had negative effects on the quality of and access to education. Although considerable efforts was done by local and international non-governmental organizations with the purpose of lowering the illiteracy level in Kosovo, the education of women, girls and children remains an issue that needs attention. Girls increasingly continue to abolish their education and only 15.8 percent of girls continue to follow higher education. The process of reforming the education system in Kosovo started in 1999, immediately after the war ended. However, there is little knowledge of what the reforms have achieved and what are the changes that have occurred in the field. How much was the gender perspective included in the curricula? Do the schoolbooks contain contents that reflect gender sensitive approaches? What has changed in the aspect of overcoming prejudices based on gender in the teaching process? How much are the teachers, directors and managers gender sensitive in their daily work? Have the rural areas fallen behind on reforms due to the lack of financial means?
