Description'The purpose of this thesis is not only to gain an understanding of what is known as the glass ceiling, but also to make recommendations for future female leaders on how to be successful, as well as for organizations that wish to increase their percentage of women at the top. First, the research evidence on barriers that constitute the glass ceiling is reviewed, of which four categories emerge: stereotypes, the old boy network, female modesty, and the family. Next, the literature concerning the relationship between gender and leadership is assessed. The literature review serves as a foundation for the evaluation of the results of the qualitative study, which is the second part of this thesis.'
