Description | Exploration of the changing functions and meanings of quilts within the life of a South Carolina family from the late eighteenth century to the present day. Central person - Mary Louise Snoddy Black (1860 - 1927) - accumulated sixteen quilts made by women in her family. In seeking to understand how and why the quilts in Mary Black's collection came about, as well as their role in the daily lives of family, friends, and community, the author draws upon oral history interviews and archival materials, like personal letters, journals, ledgers, wills, estate records, newspaper articles, obituaries, and census reports dating back to the eighteenth century. |
