Description | Interviewing women of different ages and backgrounds, Al-Jawaheri examines the impact of the UN economic sanctions of Iraq on women's employment status, on different forms of female education, on gender relations inside the family, on violence against women, and on women's domestic responsibilities. She adds a chapter on the history of the relations of Iraqi women and the state, with emphasis on the legislation and characteristics of female labour participation. She demonstrates that the explosion of violence and intimidation against women should not have taken people by surprise. The deterioration of gender relations was already taking place during the decade of international sanctions. The war and subsequent upsurge intensified problems. |
