- Description
- The book focuses on how the notion of being 'high caste, as it developed and transformed during the colonial period, contributed to the formation of a 'middle class' among the Hindus and the Sikhs in the Punjab. This had an impact on gender relations, as caste was seen as a quality 'attached' to men, making women's relationship to it ambiguous.

- Description

- Description
- Growing up in Kenya, Kenda Mutongi encountered a perplexing contradiction. While the young teachers at her village school railed against colonialism, many of her elders, including her widowed mother, praised their former British masters. In this book Mutongi explores how both the challenges and contradictions of colonial rule and the frustrations and failures of independence shaped the lives of Maragoli widows and their complex relations with each other, their families, and the larger community. Throughout the twentieth century and into the twenty-first, rates of widowhood have been remarkably high in Kenya. Mutongi here argues that widows survive by publicly airing their social, economic, and political problems, their “worries of the heart.” Initially aimed at the men in their community, and then their colonial rulers, this strategy changed after independence as widows increasingly invoked the language of citizenship to demand their rights from the new leaders of Kenya —leaders whose failure to meet the needs of ordinary citizens has led to deep disenchantment and altered Kenyans’ view of their colonial past.

- Description
- This book aims at re-examining the issue of 'everyday resistance' through the lens of women's experiences in colonial South Asia. The overwhelming image of Indian women during the period is one of passivity, with the exception of some outstanding figures. The attempt in the present volume is to unearth a narrative of deeper and more enduring resistance offered by less extraordinary women in their daily lives. This collection of essays brings together unconventional sources such as women's songs, photographs, and embroidery, but equally from legal records, memoirs, and published work, to present women in far more assertive and/or subversive roles.

- Description
- Prior to European colonialism, Igboland, a region in Nigeria, was a nonpatriarchal, nongendered society governed by separate but interdependent political systems for men and women. In the last one hundred fifty years, the Igbo family has undergone vast structural changes in response to a barrage of cultural forces. Critically rereading social practices and oral and written histories of Igbo women and the society, Nkiru Uwechia Nzegwu demonstrates how colonial laws, edicts, and judicial institutions facilitated the creation of gender inequality in Igbo society. Nzegwu exposes the unlikely convergence of Western feminist and African male judges’ assumptions about 'traditional' African values where women are subordinate and oppressed. Instead she offers a conception of equality based on historical Igbo family structures and practices that challenges the epistemological and ontological bases of Western feminist inquiry.

- Description
- Samita Sen's history of laboring women in Bengal in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries considers how social constructions of gender shaped their lives. The author demonstrates how the long-term trends in the Indian economy devalued women's labor, establishing patterns of urban migration and changing gender equations within the family. She relates these trends to the spread of dowry, enforced widowhood and child marriage.
