- Description
- Themes of embodiment and agency have long been central to feminist philosophical thought and have increasingly led feminists to extend their theorizing to encompass a range of identities shaped by processes of gender, race, class, disability, and sexuality. The intersection of these themes, however, has often been limited to analyzing how specific modes of socialized embodiment can be impediments to agency or autonomy. .This book brings together a range of theoretical perspectives and resources to the project in ways that stress possibilities as well as constraints. Contributors utilize phenomenology, psychoanalysis, care ethics, analytic philosophy, Hegelian critique, and postcolonial theory to examine embodiment and agency in contexts ranging from a child's struggle to find her own identity to global politics. Part I of this book explores how we become individually and collectively identified subjects through the possibilities for agency that arise from specific modes of embodiment. Part II continues the theme of embodied agency in contemporary sociopolitical contexts. It reconceptualizes the links between embodiment and moral agency in ways adequate to political realities, personal relationships, and collective responsibilities.

- Description
- Abortion, pornography, gay marriage, homosexuality, and HIV are a few in a long line of issues that have erupted into panics. These sexual panics spark moral crusades and campaigns, defining how we think about sexual and reproductive rights. The essays in this book focus on case studies ranging from sex education to AIDS to race and the 'down low,' to illustrate how sexuality is at the heart of many political controversies. The contributors also reveal how moral and sexual panics have become a mainstay of certain kinds of conservative efforts to win elections and gain power in moral, social, and political arenas. The authors provide new insights into the role that key moral panics have played in social processes, arguing against the political abuse of sex panics and for the need to defend full sexual and reproductive rights.

- Description
- This publication interrogates the politics of interculturality and translation to explore how key concepts of representation, responsibility, and complexity might be practically applied within feminist pedagogy. Interlinking pedagogical theories with collaborative teaching at the universities of Trento, Athens and Goldsmiths (London), the essays refuse to separate scholarship from politics, and theorizing from teaching. The experience of working jointly in transdisciplinary workshops and seminars aimed at gendered interculturality in the classroom is theorised to highlight issues of race, sexuality, religion, and migration and to question how to bring diverse feminist commitments into the lived present and the imagined future. Each essay presents its own definition of gendered interculturality, an exemplary teaching unit, and pedagogical theory.

- Description
- This volume provides a picture of the current state of feminist sociological gender and women's studies research in four regions of the world--Africa, Asia, Latin America/Caribbean, and Europe. The introductory essay to each region explains how social science research on women and/or gender issues has been shaped by economics, politics, and culture, and by trends that are simultaneously local, regional and global. Then each regional section includes up to chapters on gender research in specific countries that represent the region's diversity and cover the major trends that have emerged over time, as well as the relationship of key research questions to feminist activism and women’s or gender studies. The editors illustrate this new wave of gender scholarship with samples of research articles from additional countries in the region, that cover a wide range of topics, such as work, sexuality, masculinities, childcare and family issues, religion, violence, law and gender policies. Finally, this volume provides scholars with extensive bibliographies and a listing of web sites for women’s and gender research centers in 85 countries.

- Description
- This collection introduces a shift in debates on sexuality: a shift away from discourse, identity and signification, to a new conception of bodily materialism. Moving away from the established path known as queer theory, it suggests an alternative to Butler's matter/representation binary. It thus asks how to think sexuality and sex outside the discursive and linguistic context that has come to dominate contemporary research in social sciences and humanities. The book explores a range of themes including: the revisiting of the term 'queer': a rethinking of the sex-gender distinction as being implied in Queer Theory: an exploration of queer temporalities: the non/re-reading of the homosexual body/desire and the becoming-queer of the Deleuze/Guattari philosophy.

- Description
- This volume explores the theory of citizenship, in order to bridge the gap between the public and the private sphere. Through the application of intersectional methodology, the authors document how people’s most private decisions and practices are intertwined with public institutions and state policies. Situated perspectives, as well as application of theoretical concepts to lived experience, extend citizenship’s territory beyond the conventional public sphere and locate it at the intersection of many axes of social, political, and cultural stratification.

- Description
- This volume brings together scholars working at the intersection of Spinoza studies and critical and feminist philosophy. The twelve chapters range over the entire field of Spinoza s writings—metaphysical, political, theological, ethical, and psychological—drawing out the ways in which his philosophy presents a rich resource for the reconceptualization of friendship, sexuality, politics, and ethics in contemporary life. The introduction offers a historical sketch of Spinoza s life and intellectual context and indicates how Spinoza s philosophy might be seen as a rich cultural resource today. Topics treated here include the mind-body problem and its relation to the sex-gender distinction: relational autonomy: the nature of love and friendship: sexuality and normative morality: free will and determinism and their relation to Christian theology: imagination and recognition between the sexes: emotion and the body: and power, imagination, and political sovereignty.

- The concept called 'post-porn' was invented by erotic photographer Wink van Kempen and made popular by sexwork-activist and performance artist Annie M. Sprinkle. It claimed a new status of sexual representation: Through identifying with critical joy and agancy while deconstructing its hetero/normative and naturalising conditions, Sprinkle made us think of sex as a category open for use and appropriation of queer_feminist counter-pleasures beyond the victimising framework of censorship and taboo. What happens after the pornographic moment? What is the post.. . in porn? What is post to the term that is porn? Why watch porn? Why not? Or why not look for “other” porn? Why not produce post-porn? How do we theorize sex performance?
