- Description
- This book takes a look at women whose voices have only recently begun to be heard in Japanese society: politicians, practitioners of traditional arts, writers, radicals, wives, mothers, bar hostesses, department store and blue-collar workers. This collection of essays gives a interdisciplinary view of contemporary Japanese women while challenging readers to see the development of Japanese women's lives against the backdrop of domestic and global change. These essays provide a 'second generation' analysis of roles, issues and social change.

- Description
- Elisabeth Wilson tells stories of the artists, intellectuals, radicals, and hangers-on who populated the salons, bars, and cafés of Paris, London, Berlin, New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco since the early nineteenth century. The book is a quest for the many shifting notions of bohemianism that give rise to debate about the role of art and artists. She explores the role of sex and erotic love, the role of women in Bohemia, the bohemian search for eccentricity and excess, and the politics of many bohemians. Many examples are given, amongst others: Djuna Barnes, Suzanne Valadon, Josephine Baker, Nancy Cunard, Andy Warhol, Juliette Greco, Allen Ginsberg, and Marianne Faithfull. Examples of politics: lesbianism, feminism, mysticism, and marxism

Haar schilderijen hangen wereldwijd in musea.

- Description
- Ruth Hemus establishes the ways in which five European women - Emmy Hennings and Sophie Taeuber in Zurich, Hannah Höch in Berlin, and Suzanne Duchamp and Céline Arnauld in Paris - made important interventions across fine art, literature, and performance. The author highlights how their techniques and approaches were characteristic of Dada's rebellion against aesthetic and cultural conventions, analyses the impact of gender on each woman's work, and shows that they were innovators and not imitators.

- Description
- The texts gathered in this volume embrace women artists-only exhibitions, festivals, collective art projects, groups and associations, organised in the long 1970s in Europe (1968-1984). This book presents examples from Italy, Spain, United Kingdom, Portugal, Austria, Poland, Denmark, Germany (East and West), The Netherlands, France and Sweden. While each chapter is largely devoted to one country, the authors point to how the local and specific political situation in which these initiatives emerged is linked to global tendencies as well as inter-European exchanges.

- Description
- Gendering Modernism offers a critical reappraisal of the modernist movement, asking how gender norms of the time shaped the rebellion of the self-avowed modernists and examining the impact of radical gender reformers on modernism. Focusing primarily on the connections between North American and European modernists, the author explains why it is imperative that we consider the gender angles of modernism as a way to understand the legacies of the movement. She provides an overview of the scholarship on modernism and an analysis of how definitions of modernism have evolved with that scholarship. Interweaving case studies from before the Great War to the interwar period - looking at individual modernists from Ibsen to Picasso, Hannah Höch to Josephine Baker - she covers various fields such as art, literature, theatre and film, whilst also demonstrating how modernism manifested itself in the major social-political and cultural shifts of the 20th century, including feminism, psychology, sexology, eugenics, nudism, anarchism, communism and fascism.

- Description
- Numerous American women artists built successful professional careers in the mid-twentieth century while confronting challenging cultural transitions: shifts in stylistic avant-gardism, harsh political transformations, and changing gender expectations for both women and men. However, while a few women working during these decades have gained significant recognition, many others are still consigned to historical obscurity. The essays in this volume take varied approaches to revising this historical silence. Two focus on evidence of gender biases in several exhibitions and contemporary critical writings: the rest discuss individual artists’ complex relationships to mainstream developments, with attention to gender and political biases, cultural innovations, and the influence of racial/ethnic diversity. Several also explore new interpretative directions to open alternative possibilities for evaluating women’s aesthetic and formal choices. Contents: Introduction: challenges, tensions, accomplishments / Helen Langa. Part I Exhibitions: Opportunities and Resistances: Art of this century: a transitional space for women / Siobhan M. Conaty: Gender, modern art, and native women painters in the first half of the 20th century / Cynthia Fowler. Melissa Wolfe: Strategies of artistic survival: Julia Thecla’s science fictions of the 1960s / Joanna Gardner-Huggett. - Description
- First published in 2018. This book is published on the occasion of the exhibition on the Swedish painter Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) titled 'Hilma af Klint: paintings for the future' in Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, United States, from October 12, 2018 to April, 23, 2019. Within the arc of her production from naturalistic work in the 1890s to watercolours in the 1940s, the book and exhibition focuses on the period 1906-1920. Hilma af Klint created a body of work known as 'The paintings for the temple' that broke from the dominant painting style and are primarily abstract. Her early arrival at abstraction - before modernists as Vasily Kandinsky and Piet Mondriaan - is a radical effort to find visual expression for a transcendent, spiritual reality beyond the observable world.
