- Charlotte Carmichael Stopes (1841-1929) was the first woman in Scotland to gain a university qualification. She devoted her life to the study of Shakespeare and to the promotion of women in public life. Though Charlotte is largely forgotten, her daughter Marie Carmichael Stopes (1880-1958) is well known as a passionate advocate of sex education and women’s rights. In this study Green asserts that Marie’s success can only be understood in relation to the achievements of her mother.

- Description
- It is paradoxical that instinct became a central term for late Victorian sexual sciences as they were elaborated in the medicalized spaces of confession and introspection, given that instinct had long been defined in its opposition to self-conscious thought. This book ties this paradox to instinct's deployment in conceptualizing governmentality. Instinct's domain, Frederickson argues, extended well beyond the women, workers, and 'savages' to whom it was so often ascribed. For elite European men, instinct became both an agent of 'progress' and a force that, in contrast to desire, offered a plenitude in answer to the alienation of self-consciousness.This shift in instinct's appeal to privileged European men modified the governmentality of empire, labor, and gender. The book traces these changes through parliamentary papers, pornographic fiction, accounts of Aboriginal Australians, suffragette memoirs, and scientific texts in evolutionary theory, sexology, and early psychoanalysis.

- Description
- Special consideration in this volume is given to gender issues arising during periods when upheaval challenged colonial regimes, which often resulted in decolonization and independence. Chapters also reveal how former colonies transitioned into ‘nations,’ along with transnational dynamics that took place among modern states. A common thread woven through each article is the matter of precisely who it was that deserved to be treated and recognized as fully human in an era of imperial exchanges and ongoing capitalist globalization. Authors describe hemes as labour, commodities, fashion, mobility, and activism while exploring the dynamics of empire in destinations ranging from Africa and the Americas to Europe and Asia. .Originally published as Gender & History Volume 26 Issue 3

- Description
- Looking forward to the 100-year anniversary of the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment, this collection of essays looks back at the decades since women won the right to vote to analyze the changes, developments, and even continuities in women's roles in the broad political sphere. Ultimately, the book asks two questions about the last 100 years of women's suffrage: How did the Nineteenth Amendment alter the American political system? and How has women's engagement in politics changed over the last 100 years?

- Description
- The Fourteenth Amendment, ratified on July 9, 1868, identified all legitimate voters as ‘male’. In so doing, it added gender-specific language to the U.S. Constitution for the first time. In this publication the author describes the pre- and postwar fights over precisely who should have the right to vote. She demonstrates that all men, black and white, were the ultimate victors of these fights, as gender became the single most important marker of voting rights during Reconstruction. In the final chapter the author considers how Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony reacted to the failure of their congressional petition campaign.

- Description
- In this study Bolt sheds light on the differences in the area of race, class and internationalism, which flourished in an era of political reaction, economic insecurity, polarising nationalism and resurgent anti-feminism. The author reveals how the conflicts were seized upon and publicised by contemporaries, and how the activists themselves were forced to confront the increasingly complex tensions. in particular, the American and british women's movements grew further apart as British women became more conscious of American money, expectation of influence and opposition to the existence of Britain's empire.

- Description
- Cornelia Sorabji was a truly ambitious and remarkable woman. She was intellectually daring and physically courageous As India’s first female lawyer, she was original and often outspoken in her views , for example, in her criticism of Gandhi and her surprising friendship with Katherine Mayo. Cornelia Sorabji resists easy classification, either as a feminist or as an imperialist. An Indian whose loyalty to the British Raj never wavered. A passionate advocate of women’s rights whose own career was nearly compromised through her inappropriate relationship with a married man. An independent and free-thinking intellectual who depended for work on patronage from an élite circle. Cornelia Sorabji's long and fulfilling life was anything but simple. How did she reconcile these apparent contradictions? How did she succeed in opening doors to aspects of Indian and British life which remain closed to so many, even today -- and where did she run into difficulties?

- Julia Ward (1819–1910) was a heiress and aspiring poet when she married Dr. Samuel Gridley Howe, a pioneer in the education of the blind. The Howes knew many of the key figures of their era, from Charles Dickens to John Brown. But he also wasted her inheritance, isolated and discouraged her, and opposed her literary ambitions. Julia persisted, and continued to publish poems and plays while raising six children. Authorship of the Battle Hymn of the Republic made her celebrated and revered. But Julia was also continuing to fight a civil war at home: she became a pacifist, suffragist, and world traveler. She came into her own as a tireless campaigner for women’s rights and social reform.

At the height of the Victorian period, early feminists united to fight for the cause of women, called for a new kind of marriage based on companionship, claimed the right to divorce and to get custody of their children. - Description
- As early as 1837 some Nicaraguan women expressed interest in eliminating the tyranny of male domination, and this interest grew into full-fledged campaigns for female suffrage and access to education by the 1880s. By the 1920s a feminist movement emerged among urban, middle-class women and lasted for two more decades until it was eclipsed in the 1950s by a nonfeminist movement of mainly Catholic, urban, middle-class and working-class women who supported the liberal, populist, patron-clientelistic regime of the Somozas in return for the right to vote and various economic, educational, and political opportunities. Counterintuitively, it was actually the Somozas who encouraged the participation of women in the public sphere (as long as they remained loyal Somocistas), whereas their opponents, the Sandinistas and Conservatives, often appealed to women through their maternal identity.

- Description
- Elizabeth Cady Stanton (1815-1902) was not only one of the most important leaders of the nineteenth century women’s rights movement but was also the movement’s principal philosopher. Her ideas both drew from and challenged the conventions that so severely constrained women’s choices and excluded them from public life. .In this book the author argues that Cady Stanton’s work reflects the rich tapestry of American political culture in the second half of the nineteenth century and that she deserves recognition as a major figure in the history of political ideas. Davis reveals the way that Cady Stanton’s work drew from different political traditions ranging from liberalism, republicanism, inegalitarian ascriptivism, and radicalism. Cady Stanton’s arguments for women’s rights combined approaches that in contemporary feminist theory are perceived to involve conflicting strategies and visions. Her ideas had a major impact on the development of the varieties of feminism in the twentieth century.

- Description
- Freedman demonstrates that our definition of rape has depended heavily on dynamics of political power and social privilege. The long-dominant view of rape in America envisioned a brutal attack on a chaste white woman by a male stranger, usually an black man. From the early nineteenth century, advocates for women’s rights and racial justice challenged this narrow definition and the sexual and political power of white men that it sustained. Between the 1870s and the 1930s, at the height of racial segregation and lynching, and amid the campaign for woman suffrage, women’s rights supporters and African American activists tried to expand understandings of rape in order to gain legal protection from coercive sexual relations, assaults by white men on black women, street harassment, and the sexual abuse of children. By redefining rape, they sought to redraw the very boundaries of citizenship. Freedman narrates the victories, defeats, and limitations of these and other reform efforts. The modern civil rights and feminist movements, she points out, continue to grapple with both the insights and the dilemmas of these first campaigns to redefine rape in American law and culture.
