- Description
- The authors show how today's gender inequality are social constructs, viewpoints and bias. Using historical, sociological and psychological perspectives, they demonstrate how gendered outcomes at work are not natural but artificial. This book explains how we - men and women together - built a world divided between men and women. It shows where our ideas of gender come from, how they operate in the world of work, and what we can do to change them.

- Description
- Investigation on how the living conditions of working women in comparison with those of men are touched by the world wide economy: political and cultural changes transform labour markets, frames of division of work, labour organisation and family structures. Women profit by the emergence of working places that are brought force by new market activities. But at the same time many of them lose qualified occupations by shifting from full-time to part-time jobs, from high paid sectors to low remunerated industries.

- Description
- Nowadays women are successful careerists equal to men. In Norway, women legally must constitute a third of all boards: in America, women have gone from 3% of practising lawyers in 1970 to 40% today, and over half of all law students. These changes are revolutionary, but not universal: the 'sisterhood' of working women is deeply divided. Making enormous strides in the workplace are young, educated, full-time professionals who have put children on hold. But for a second group of women this is unattainable: instead, they work part-time, earn less, are concentrated in heavily feminised occupations like cleaning and gain income and self-worth from having children young. As these two groups move ever further apart, shared gender no longer automatically creates interests in common with other women.
