- Description
- This book offers an analysis of case studies on family violence between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries, using court records as their main source. It raises questions for research on early modern Europe: the notion of absolute power: sovereignty and its applicability to familial power: the problem of violence and the possibility of its usage for conflict resolution both in public and private spaces: and the interconnection of gender and violence against women, reconsidered in the context of modern state formation as a public sphere and family building as a private sphere. Contributors bring together studies of domestic violence and spousal murder in Romania, England, and Russia, abduction and forced marriage in Poland, infanticide and violence against parents in Finland, and rape and violence against women in Germany.

With a summary in English.

- This book provides an examination of conditions and factors involved in domestic violence, including psychological, sociocultural, sociopolitical, and socioeconomic issues. The authors look at domestic violence through the trauma lens and intersectionality to develop intervention strategies within that context. Statistics and clinical examples from the field highlight culturally-based issues related to domestic violence among Latino, African American, and Arab Muslim communities, issues with woman perpetrators, and violence in the LGBTQ community, to name a few.

- Description
- This book assesses the scale and scope of transformations in family life and their implications for gender equality and women’s empowerment. The world as well as families, and the role of women and girls within them, are changing. The report approaches families as institutions where both cooperation (solidarity and love) and conflict (inequality and violence) coexist. It explains how unequal outcomes within families are influenced by family members’ unequal power to negotiate. It also highlights the contribution of social support systems, such as women’s rights organizations, and progressive social norms. The report provides policy recommendations in order to support families and meet the needs of their members.

- Description
- Despite global undertakings to safeguard the full enjoyment of human rights, culture, traditional practices and religion are widely used to discriminate against women. In this volume 17 scholars approach women's human rights globally, regionally and nationally, combining the perspectives of public and private international law. Comprehensive legal, culture-based and theoretical overviews are combined with analyses of topical issues, such as unbalanced sex-ratios, intercountry adoption, women as refugees or as 'surrogate mothers,' violence against women and cross-border enforcement of protection orders.

- Description
- For centuries, women who suffered sexual assault perpetrated by their spouses had no legal recourse. A man's conjugal rights included his right to have sexual intercourse with his wife regardless of whether she consented. This right has been recognised in law, and still is in some jurisdictions. This book emerges from the research undertaken by a multi-country academic collaborative project dedicated to analyzing the legal treatment of sexual assault in intimate relationships (marital rape), with a view to challenging the legal impunity for and inadequate legal responses to this form of gendered violence.

- This book complements the work carried out in the legal, human services, and health fields by demonstrating how a focus on local issues and responses can better inform a collaborative global response to the problem of gender-based violence. The chapters in this volume provide evidence that top-down responses to violence have been inadequate, and that solutions are available when the local historical, political, and social context is taken into consideration.

- From early modernity to today, society has encountered forms of interpersonal violence. Through exploration of areas within Europe and Russia to Africa, America and Asia, this collection presents various forms of interpersonal violence in different times, places, institutional orders and relationships. The book demonstrates how the specificity of temporality and spatiality affect the manifestation of violence, how the dynamics of intersectional and institutional differences are located in social space and time and how the different forms of violence in different times are affectively, conceptually and discursively connected.
