- Description
- This book explores the history of homophobia in Russia, by examining nine 'case histories' that reveal the origins and development of homophobic attitudes in modern Russia. In the first part it examines some sites of homophobic violence in Russia after 1945. Secondly, it looks at the rise of a visible LGBT scene in late Soviet and later post-communist Russian society. The third part is about writing and remembering Russia's queer past. The author argues that the lack of adequate historical research and memory work will weaken the future of Russia's LGBT citizens.

- Description
- Book about the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, an order of nuns known as “twenty-first century queer nuns”. In 1979 three gay men donned retired Roman Catholic nuns’ habits and visited San Francisco’s gay Castro district. Because of the positive reactions they received, they considered whether the habits might be applied to social justice work leading to the founding of the order. Today the Sisters offer support and protest on behalf of queer communities all over the world. The book considers the role of the Sisters in queer culture and the religious landscape. The Sisters both mystify nuns and argue seriously that they are nuns, adopting an innovative approach like a serious parody. Shown is that through the use of this strategy the Sisters are able to offer an effective approach to community-based activism.
