- Description
- Through the stories of Black women who have been most affected by racism, poverty, class inequality, Richie shows that the threat of violence to Black women has never been more serious. She demonstrates how conservative legal, social, political and economic policies have impacted activism in the U.S.-based movement to end violence against women. Richie argues that Black women face particular peril because of the ways that race and culture have not figured centrally enough in the analysis of the causes of gender violence. This book brings issues of sexuality, class, age, and criminalization into focus right alongside of questions of public policy and gender violence, resulting in a critique, a re-framing of stories, and a call to action for change.

- Description
- Michael Taussig scrutinizes the attempts people make to transform their bodies through cosmetic surgery and liposuction. He balances an examination of surgeries meant to enhance an individual’s beauty with an often overlooked counterpart, surgeries performed to disguise one’s identity. Situating this globally shared phenomenon within the economic, cultural, and political history of Colombia, Taussig links the country’s long civil war and its bodily mutilation and torture to the beauty industry at large, sketching Colombia as a country whose high aesthetic stakes make it a stage where some of the most important and problematic ideas about the body are played out.
