- Description
- Based on ethnographic fieldwork in London the author explores ways in which the Turkish community constructs its own forms of integration through the expansion of the ethnic economy. The author argues that women are silent contributors to the ethnic economy and that women's work and their role in the maintenance of social ties and networks play an important role in the economic success of the Turkish community. She also argues that Turkish women in Britain zig-zag their way to social integration.

- Description
- This bookdevelops essential insights concerning the notion of transnational citizenship by means of the life stories of highly educated Turkish migrant women in Germany and Great Britain, interweaving and developing theories of citizenship, identity and hybridity with the lived experiences of an immigrant group that has so far received insufficient attention. By focusing on the British and German contexts, it introduces a European and comparative perspective, whilst exploring the ways in which concepts and policies of citizenship allow for a differentiated examination of ethnicity, gender, multiculturalism and citizenship in Europe. With its empirical material in its exploration of the ways in which migrant women, though often marginalized from the nation as legal or cultural outsiders, create new meanings of belonging, this book suggests how citizenship debates can be reframed to be inclusive of migrant women as actors.

- Description
- This book addresses major societal trends associated with changes in gender relations, familybuilding and patters of work, ageing, and integration of migrants, which mark Europe at the turn of the 21st century. It builds on the networking of 11 European Population institutes from Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, the Netherlands and Poland. The Network for Integrated European Population Studies (NIEPS) took stock of research carried out at the national level and literature produced in a variety of European languages in view to provide the knowledge-base for integrated population-related policies at the European level.
