- Description
- This book contains the letters from Gabriel Russier (1937-1969), most of them written from prison. The introduction of the book tells the story of a love affair in the 1960s between the 30-year-old French teacher, Gabrielle Russier, and a student of 16, Christian Rossi. This affair, which was considered a scandal because the perpetrator was a woman, resulted in her persecution, imprisonment and finally in her suicide.

- Description
- The authors examine political scandals and familiar characters, including scolds, cuckolds and witches, to show how their behaviour turned the ordered world around them upside down in very specific, gendered ways. Using case studies from theatre, civic ritual and witchcraft, the book demonstrates how ideas of gendered inversion, failed patriarchs, and disorderly women permeate the mental world of early modern England. Amussen and Underdown show both how these ideas were central to understanding society and politics as well as the ways in which both women and men were disciplined formally and informally for inverting the gender order. In doing so, they give a glimpse of how we can connect different dimensions of early modern society.

- Description
- Double biography of the cousins Queen Elizabeth I of England (1533-1603) and Mary, Queen of Scots (1542-1587) and their approach to marriage in the age of absolute monarchies, as well as their personal and political relationships with suitors and courtiers. Marriage was a necessity for any monarch. No marriage, no offspring, no dynasty. Europe has never known a bachelor king. On the other hand, there have been queens who remained unmarried. Like Elizabeth who made the conscious choice never to marry, and therefore never subordinated herself and her power to a male consort, whilst at the same time using the possibility of marriage as a tool to manipulate the balance of power in Europe, In contrast, Mary, acting like a woman, and a woman in thrall to passion, married three times. These decisions affected their destinies, linked them inextricably, and culminated in Mary's execution at Elizabeth's behest.
