- Description
- Sophia Tolstoy was the wife of Leo Tolstoy, who was not only a writer, but also a controversial figure in the turmoil of pre-revolutionary Russia. Like other aristocratic Russian women of her era, she was a devoted mother and wife, and the doyenne of the family estate. She gave birth to 13 children, of whom eight survived into adulthood, and she copied and redacted her husbands voluminous work. She still found time for photography and keeping a diary. In this book Lea Bendavid-Val presents a portret of Countess Tolstoy, her husband and family, life on a 19-century Russian estate, and the worlds of servants & peasants. Central to the book is a collection of 180 of Sophia's photographs, selected fragments from her diaries and the author's commentary. With a chronology of events from the life and times of Sophia and Lev Tolstoy.
