- Description
- An lot of literary and intellectual work by nineteenth-century black women is being rediscovered. This work chronicles a powerful and interwoven legacy of activism based in social and political theories that helped shape the history of North America. The book meticulously reclaims this American legacy, providing a collection of critical analyses of the primary sources and their vital traditions. Written by leading scholars, Black Women’s Intellectual Traditions is particularly powerful in its exploration of the pioneering thought and action of the nineteenth-century black woman lecturer and essayist Maria W. Stewart, abolitionist Sojourner Truth, novelist and poet Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, educator Anna Julia Cooper, newspaper editor Mary Ann Shadd Cary, and activist Ida B. Wells.

- Description
- All three women would go on to become icons, key figures in American cultural, intellectual, and political life, but when they embarked for France, they were young, uncertain about their future, and drawn to the culture and sophistication that only Paris could offer. Yet their backgrounds and their dreams couldn’t have been more different. Jacqueline Bouvier was a twenty-year-old debutante, a Catholic girl from a wealthy East Coast family. Susan Sontag was twenty-four, a precocious Jewish intellectual from a North Hollywood family of modest means, and Paris was a refuge from motherhood, a failing marriage, and graduate work in philosophy at Oxford. Angela Davis, a French major at Brandeis from a prominent African American family in Birmingham, Alabama, found herself the only black student in her year abroad program—in a summer when all the news from Birmingham was of unprecedented racial violence.Kaplan takes readers into the lives, hopes, and ambitions of these young women, tracing their paths to Paris and tracking the discoveries, intellectual adventures, friendships, and loves that they found there.

- Description
- This book traces the development of a Left feminist consciousness as women became more actively involved in the American Left during and immediately following World War II. McDonald argues that women writers on the Left drew on the rhetoric of antifascism to critique the cultural and ideological aspects of women's oppression. The book provides a historical overview of women writers who anticipated issues about women's oppression and the intersections of gender, race, and class that would become central tenants of feminist literary criticism and black feminist criticism in the 1970s and 1980s. It closely considers works by writers both well-known and obscure, including Lorraine Hansberry, Alice Childress, Martha Dodd, Sanora Babb, and Beth McHenry.

- Description
R.A. Biegel (1886-1943). Elisa Liberatori Prati World Bank Group Chief Archivist and Manager of the World Bank Library and Archives of Development, and Michelle Dolbec, Archivist of the International Monetary Fund, over hun archieven.

- The author explores the metaphor of the 'girlfriend' as a new way of understanding three central concepts of cultural studies: self, memory, and language. He considers how the work of writers such as Toni Morrison, Ama Ata Aidoo, Dionne Brand, photographer Lorna Simpson, and others, inform debates over the concept of identity. Described are the singular identity with the concept of self development, the memory as a literal body that is crucial to the process of becoming and finally, the problem that language poses for the black woman artist and her commitment to a mastery that neither colonizes nor excludes.

- Description
- Reading a series of prose texts by 20th century white women writers this study interrogates a correlation between authors' subject positions as white and their textual investments in American history. It displaces the diffuse acceptance of whiteness as a given property by foregrounding it as a shared, and unquestioned feature of the white reader's and the text's consciousness. To trace the literary legacies of white amnesia about the Middle Passage is an urgent response to white women writers' participation in US-American historical mythology.

- Des Jardins explores the work of a wide variety of women historians, both professional and amateur, white and nonwhite. These historians addressed new questions and represented social groups traditionally omitted from the historical record, such as workers, African Americans, Native Americans, and religious minorities. Assessing the historical contributions of Mary Ritter Beard, Zora Neale Hurston, Angie Debo, Mari Sandoz, Lucy Salmon, Mary McLeod Bethune, Dorothy Porter, Nellie Neilson and many others, Des Jardins argues that women working within the confines of the historical enterprise collectively brought the new perspectives of social and cultural history to the study of a multifaceted American past.

- Description
- Examining Morrison's novels, essays, speeches, and interviews, the author illustrates Morrison builds upon black women's experiences of and perspectives on motherhood to develop a view of black motherhood that is radically different than the motherhood practiced and prescribed in the dominant culture. Motherhood, in Morrison's view, is fundamentally and profoundly an act of resistance, essential and integral to black women's fight against racism (and sexism) and their ability to achieve well-being for themselves and their culture.
