- Description
- After decades of silence on the subject of homosexuality, television in the 1990s saw a striking increase in programming that incorporated and, in many cases, centered on gay material. In shows including Friends, Seinfeld, Homicide, Suddenly Susan, The Commish, Ellen, Will & Grace, and others, gay characters were introduced, references to homosexuality became commonplace, and issues of gay and lesbian relationships were explored, often in explicit detail. .In this book Becker draws on a wide range of political and cultural indicators to explain this sudden upsurge of gay material on prime-time network television.

- Description
- On November 3, 1992, a majority of Colorado voters approved Amendment 2, a measure placed on the ballot by the right-wing religious group Colorado for Family Values, amending the state constitution to allow 'no protected status based on homosexual, lesbian or bisexual orientation.' A lawsuit was immediately filed against the initiative, and the ensuing legal battle provides a fascinating look at the political process in the ongoing cultural wars. Keen and Goldberg chronicle the background, strategies, proceedings, and arguments of the case, which became known as Romer v. Evans. Ultimately, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled the measure unconstitutional, temporarily tempering growing support for copycat measures across the country and reasserting the constitutional promise of democracy and liberty for all.

- Description
- In this book the authors introduce the diverse strands of feminist legal theory and the array of substantive legal issues relevant to women's and gender studies. The book centers on feminist legal theories—including equal treatment theory, cultural feminism, dominance theory, critical race feminism, lesbian feminism, post-modern feminism, and ecofeminism. The primer demonstrates the ways feminist legal theory operates in real-life contexts, including domestic violence, reproductive rights, workplace discrimination, education, sports, pornography, and global issues of gender. Levit and Verchick highlight a sweeping range of cutting edge topics at the intersection of law and gender, such as women in the military, abortion, same sex marriage and the international trafficking in women and girls.

- Description
- Artist and educator Ria Brodell researched the lives of people worldwide who didn't conform to gender norms, from the fifteenth through the twentieth centuries. In this book she offers twenty-eight portraits of forgotten individuals who were assigned female at birth but whose gender presentation was more masculine than feminine, who did not want to enter into heterosexual marriage, and who often faced punishments for being themselves. Each portrait is accompanied by a biographical note. The paintings are modeled on Catholic holy cards, this way subverting a religious template.

- Description
- The period of reform, revolution, and reaction that characterized seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Europe also witnessed an intensified interest in lesbians. In scientific treatises and orientalist travelogues, in French court gossip and Dutch court records, in passionate verse, in the rising novel, and in cross-dressed flirtations on the English and Spanish stage, poets, playwrights, philosophers, and physicians were placing sapphic relations before the public eye. In this book Lanser shows how intimacies between women became harbingers of the modern, bringing the sapphic into the mainstream of some of the most significant events in Western Europe. Ideas about female same-sex relations became a focal point for intellectual and cultural contests between authority and liberty, power and difference, desire and duty order and governance. Lanser explores the ways in which a historically specific interest in lesbians intersected with systemic concerns that would seem to have little to do with sexuality.

- Description
- In this collection voices in feminist and queer theory are brought together to create an interdisciplinary dialogue that will define the terms of the debates between and within feminist and queer a theoretical framework. These debates revolve around the multiple interrelated issues - such as gender, identity, intimacy, privacy, and sex harassment - that all extend from the emphasis given to gender on the one hand and sex and sexuality on the other. These two theories have much in common but also much that distinguishes them from one another, and that causes tension. The authors in this volume explore the legal, political, social and cultural implications of their distinct theoretical approaches to gender and sexuality.
