- Description
- Daniels investigates the white supremacist imagination, and argues that the ideology of white supremacist groups is much closer to core American values than most of us would like to believe. The book explores white supremacist ideology through an analysis of over 300 publications from a variety of white supremacist organizations. It examines the discourse of these publications and the ways in which 'whites,' 'blacks,' and 'Jews' are constructed within that discourse.

- Description
- This book is based on over 100 oral histories gathered from women from a variety of racial, ethnic, and geographical backgrounds. Buss analyzes this body of work, identifying common themes in women's lives and resistance that unite the oral histories she has gathered. From the beginning, her work has shed light on the inseparable, compounding effects of gender, race, ethnicity, and class on women's lives, what is now commonly called intersectionality. The book is structured thematically, with each chapter analyzing a concept that runs through the oral histories, e.g., agency, activism, religion.

- Description
- How are the ways that race organizes our lives related to the ways gender and class organize our lives? How might these organizing mechanisms conflict or work together? In this book the author likens race, class, and gender to foods – foods that are produced in fields, mixed together in bowls, and digested in our social and institutional bodies. In the field, one food may contaminate another through cross-pollination. In the mixing bowl, each food’s original molecular structure changes in the presence of others. And within a meal, the presence of one food may impede or facilitate the digestion of another. At each of these sites, the “foods” of race, class, and gender are involved in dynamic relationships with each other that have implications for the shape – or the taste – of our social order.

The book situates the novels within the theoretical discussions surrounding exile studies, social history and women's writing. . .Contents: Exile Studies in Germany, Austria and Britain - Feminist readings of women refugee novels - Portrayal of Jewish characters - Representations of women - The possibilities of everyday life - Family sagas as multicultural utopias - Respacialisation of politics - Alternative narrative space.

- Description
- This book presents an analysis of the linkages between inequality, development, and growth from a feminist economics perspective. It examines connections between intergroup inequality and macroeconomic outcomes, considering various channels through which gender, growth, and development interact. Using a range of analytical methods, country studies, and levels of aggregation, the contributors argue that inequalities based on gender, race, ethnicity, and class undermine the ability of people to provision and live fully to their capabilities. Authors examine the effect of macroeconomic policies and economic growth on inequalities in material resources and well-being, as well as the effects of inequality on economic growth. Finally, the volume offers a rich array of policy options for promoting gender equality as both an intrinsic goal and a step toward improving well-being and broadly-shared development. This book was published as a special issue of Feminist Economics.

- Description
- In this book the author takes a gendered approach to labor conflicts, anticolonial struggles, and citizenship in modern Lebanon. The author looks at the conditions and experiences of women workers at the French Tobacco industry. Looking at culturally inscribed roles for Middle Eastern women, the book highlights traditions of public activism and militancy among rural women that are in turn adapted to the spaces of the factory. Women employed distinct strategies involving kinship, sectarian, gender, and class ties to enhance their work conditions and social benefits. The author argues that the condition of women can only be explained by exploring the shifting relationship between culture, societal arrangements, and economic settings.

- Collection of essays on cinematic motherhood. This publication explores this widespread cultural fascination with motherhood through analyses of mothers in contemporary U.S. film, including both mainstream and independent cinematic representations. The contributors draw on a variety of critical approaches to consider the spectacle of pregnancy, mother-daughter relationships, mothers as predators, narcissists, and absent victims, and the ways in which cultural anxieties are displaced and projected onto marginalized mothers in films such as 'Fargo', 'Transamerica', 'Gas, Food, Lodging', 'Ordinary People', and Scream.

Rothenberg examines the ways, both positive and negative, in which these three factors have shaped her experiences and opportunities. The purpose of this self-examination of privilege is to 'uncover the forces that often render it invisible to those who benefit from it most'. By turning the microscope on herself, she hopes to explore the unspoken privileges of the white middle class in the United States.

- Angela Y. Davis' life and work have been dedicated to examining this fundamental question and to ending all forms of oppression that deny people their political, cultural, and sexual freedom. In this collection of twelve unpublished speeches, Davis confronts the interconnected issues of power, race, gender, class, conservatism, and the ongoing need for social change in the United States. Davis addresses examples of institutional injustice and explores the radical notion of freedom as a collective striving for real democracy—not a thing granted by the state, law, proclamation, or policy, but a participatory social process, rooted in difficult dialogues, that demands new ways of thinking and being.

She also describes the arrival of the Method school of acting in Hollywood, which demanded that performers inhabit their characters’ lives. She describes how these developments reflected and helped popularize the concept of the liberal citizen in postwar America. She argues that the reception of projected identities offer new perspectives on contemporary identity politics, from feminism to the gay rights movement.

- Description
- In this book the author examines contemporary categories of difference -- sexuality, race, gender, class, and nationality -- and how they operate within the politics of domination. Drawing on the work of Georges Bataille, Michel Foucault, and others, Winnubst engages feminist theory, race theory, and queer theory as she sheds light on blind spots that have characterized thinking about freedom. Winnubst turns away from the language of rights, identity politics, and liberation toward bodies and experiences to calibrate normative ideas of time and space. Her views operate at the very limits of freedom, which contain individuals within strict boundaries that they are forbidden to cross. She develops strategies of 'queering freedom' to undo the more subtle spatial and temporal norms and shatter structures of domination.

- In this book Traister makes sense of a moment in American history that changed the country : the presidential election of 2008. Hillary Clinton’s improbable rise, her fall and her insistence on pushing forward straight through to her remarkable phoenix flight from the race: Sarah Palin’s attempt not only to fill the void left by Clinton, but to alter the very definition of feminism and claim some version of it for conservatives: liberal rapture over Barack Obama and the historic election of the first African-American president: the media microscope trained on Michelle Obama, harsher even than the one Hillary had endured fifteen years earlier. Meanwhile, media women like Katie Couric and Rachel Maddow altered the course of the election. What did all this mean to the millions of people who were glued to their TV sets, and for the country, its history and its future? As Traister sees it, the 2008 election was good for women. The campaign for the presidency reopened some of the most fraught American conversations—about gender, race and generational difference, about sexism on the left and feminism on the right—difficult discussions that had been left unfinished but that are crucial to further perfecting our union. The election was also shaped the perspectives of American women and men from different generations and backgrounds, altering the way that all of us will approach questions of women and power far into the future. When Clinton cried, when Palin reached for her newborn at the end of a vice presidential debate, the whole country was watching women’s history—American history—being made.

- Description
- This book examines gender politics during the post-World War II period and the Cold War in the United States and East and West Germany. The authors show how disruptions of older political and social patterns, exposure to new cultures, population shifts, and the rise of consumerism affected gender roles and identities. Comparing all three countries, chapters analyse the ways that gender figured into relations between victor and vanquished and shaped everyday life in both the Western and Soviet blocs. Topics include the gendering of the immediate aftermath of war: the military, politics, and changing masculinities in postwar societies: policies to restore the gender order and foster marriage and family: demobilization and the development of postwar welfare states: and debates over sexuality (gay and straight).

- Description
- This volume reflects the potential of a new perspective that allows for a more adequate analysis of transnational activities, by looking at the lives and work of women’s activists in informal border-crossings, ephemeral NGOs, the lower management of established international organizations, and other global networks. By pointing out cultural hierarchies, the vicissitudes of translation and re-interpretation, and the ambiguity of intercultural exchange, this volume demonstrates the potential of transnational history. Chapter 1. Understanding international feminisms as ‘transnational’ – an anachronism? May Wright Sewall and the creation of the International Council of Women, 1889 to 1904 / Karen Offen: Chapter 2. A forgotten instance of women’s international organizing. The transnational feminist networks of the Women’s Progressive Society (1890) and the International Women’s Union (1893–1898) / Julie Carlier: Chapter 3. The national councils of women in France, Italy and Portugal. Comparisons and entanglements 1888-1939 / Anne Cova: Chapter 4. How did women use the vote? Women and transnational politics in the twentieth century / Pat Thane: Chapter 6. A transnational career? The republican and utopian politics of Frances Wright (1795–1852) / Jane Rendall: Chapter 7. What is a transnational life? - Description
- For South Asians, food regularly plays a role in how issues of race, class, gender, ethnicity, and national identity are imagined. This book provides food for thought as it considers the metaphors literature, film, and TV shows use to describe Indians abroad. When an immigrant mother in Jhumpa Lahiri's 'The Namesake', combines Rice Krispies, Planters peanuts, onions, salt, lemon juice, and green chili peppers to create a dish similar to one found on Calcutta sidewalks, it not only evokes the character's Americanization, but also her nostalgia for India. Food, Anita Mannur writes, is a central part of the cultural imagination of diasporic populations. Mannur examines the cultural production from the Anglo-American reaches of the South Asian diaspora. Using texts from novels - Chitra Divakaruni's 'Mistress of Spices', and Shani Mootoo's 'Cereus Blooms at Night' - to cookbooks such as Madhur Jaffrey's 'Invitation to Indian Cooking' and Padma Lakshmi's 'Easy Exotic', she illustrates how national identities are consolidated in culinary terms.

Examined themes include: gender relations, feminism, Islamism and popular ideas about sexuality and morality. - Repo shows that gender is not originally a feminist term, but emerged from the study of intersex and transsexual persons in the fields of sexology and psychology in the1950s and 1960s. Prior to the 1950s gender was used to refer to various types of any number of phenomena. In the mid-twentieth century, gender shifted from being a nominator of types to designating the sexual order of things. Over the last sixty years, the notion of gender has become an entire field of knowledge. Feminists took up the term in the 1970s to challenge biological determinism. Gender has also become a key variable in social scientific surveys of different socio-political phenomena like voting, representation, employment, salaries, and parental leave decisions. Repo analyzes the strategies and tactics of power involved in the use of 'gender' in sexology and psychology, and subsequently its reversal and counter-deployment by feminists in the 1970s and 1980s. It critiques the emergence of gender in demographic science and the implications of this genealogy for feminist theory and politics today.
