- Description
- The essays in this book constitute a comparative move toward defining new and unified theoretical orientations to studying representation among women. The book begins with a theoretical positioning of the meaning of women's interests, issues and preferences. It then looks at descriptive representation in political parties, high courts, and legislatures, as well as how definitions of ‘interest’ affect who represents women in legislatures and social movements. Chapters include cases from the United States, Latin America, Western Europe and Africa. Contents: 1. Dilemmas in the meaning and measurement of representation / Maria C. Escobar-Lemmon, and Michelle M. Taylor-Robinson: 2. Plotting the path from one to the other / Karen Beckwith: 3. Intersectional representation or representing intersectionality? / Ange-Marie Hancock: 4. Representing women / Drude Dahlerup: 5. The effect of preferential voting on women’s representation / Richard E. Matland, and Emelie Lilliefeldt: 6. Gender, high courts, and ideas about representation in Western Europe / Valerie Hoekstra, Miki Caul Kittilson, and Elizabeth Andrews Bond: 7. Political inclusion and representation of afrodescendant women in Latin America / Mala Htun: 8. How civil society represents women / Alice J. Kang: 9. Unpacking women’s issues / Michele L. Swers: 10. Representing women’s interests and intersections of gender, race, and ethnicity in US State Legislatures / Beth Rein Gold, and Kerry L. Haynie: 11. Representing women / Maria C. - Looking forward to the 100-year anniversary of the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment, this collection of essays looks back at the decades since women won the right to vote to analyze the changes, developments, and even continuities in women's roles in the broad political sphere. Ultimately, the book asks two questions about the last 100 years of women's suffrage: How did the Nineteenth Amendment alter the American political system? and How has women's engagement in politics changed over the last 100 years?

- Description
- Will gender balance in elected assemblies soon be reached? Around 100 years after women's suffrage was gained most countries are still at some distance from this goal. In 2013, the average representation of women in the world's parliaments was around 20 per cent. This book analyses the longitudinal development of women's political representation in eight old democracies, where women were enfranchised before and around World War I: Denmark, Iceland, Germany, The Netherlands, New Jersey (USA), New South Wales (Australia), Sweden, and the United Kingdom. These countries/states have all followed an incremental track model of change in women's position in political life, but have followed different trajectories. This slow development stands in contrast to recent examples of fast track development in many countries from the Global South, not least as a result of the adoption of gender quotas. Furthermore, the book discusses in four separate chapters the common historical development in old democracies, the different trajectories and sequences, the framing of women politicians, and the impact of party and party system change. In this book a new model of male dominance is developed and defined in terms of both degree and scope. Four stages are identified: male monopoly, small minority, large minority, and gender balance.

- This collection reveals the interdependent construction of racial and gender identity in individuals' lived experiences in specific historical contexts, such as westward expansion, civil rights movements, or economic depression as well as national and transnational debates over marriage, citizenship and sexual mores. All of these essays consider multiple aspects of identity, including sexuality, class, religion, and nationality, among others, but the volume emphasizes gender and race as principal bases of identity and locations of power and oppression in American history.

- Description
- This collection of historical documents presents a portrait of American women's lives in the second half of the twentieth century. The book starts with the nation's entry into World War II, and its impact on women's short- and long-term employment prospects. The post war brings social and economic developments and shifting conceptions of gender. The contributions speak to a series of topics: the ideas and changes brought about by the women's movement and other social movements, the challenges to and defense of reproductive rights. The volume's diverse voices include Lilian Smith, Rosa Parks, Dagmar Wilson, Rachel Carson, Betty Friedan, Carol Gilligan, Fannie Lou Hamer, Naomi Wolf, Anita Hill, Erica Jong, and Ruth Bader Ginsberg, among many others. (Fragments) of original documents are accompanied by introductory essays and source reference.

The volume follows women on the campaign trail, in committee rooms, in floor debate, and in policy deliberations where previously the focus was on men's interests and activities. The essays are complemented by a gallery of photographs showing notable women from their earliest years of involvement with Congress to the present.

- This volume demonstrates the ways in which a gender perspective has been incorporated into existing themes and methods of migration research and has also led to the development of new areas of interest. It draws together the most important published articles on gender and migration in North America, Europe, Latin America, Africa and Asia in order to highlight major theoretical developments relating to employment, gender relations, household organisation, identity, citizenship, transnationalism and migration policy. In the introduction the editors provide an overview of these key developments in gender and migration research, as well as suggesting topics for future research.

- Description
- In this book fifty-two American women--northern and southern, young and old, urban and rural, black, white, and Latina--share their courageous personal stories of working for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) on the front lines of the Civil Rights Movement. The testimonies gathered here present a personal history of SNCC: early sit-ins, voter registration campaigns, and freedom rides: the 1963 March on Washington, the Mississippi Freedom Summer, and the movements in Alabama and Maryland: and Black Power and antiwar activism. Since the women spent time in the Deep South, many also describe risking their lives through beatings and arrests and witnessing unspeakable violence. These stories depict women, many very young, dealing with extreme fear and finding the remarkable strength to survive. The women in SNCC acquired new skills, experienced personal growth, and even had fun in the midst of serious struggle. The contributors revisit central debates of the struggle including the role of nonviolence and self-defense, the role of white people in a black-led movement, and the role of women within the Movement and the society at large.

- The book opens with several introductions Sontags works, led off by a meditation on beauty. The section might have been called 'Art and Ardor,' so laced is it with artistic passion, both Sontag's own and that of the writers she celebrates, such as Leonid Tsypkin and Anna Banti. Part three contains speeches Sontag gave in accepting the Jerusalem Prize and other awards, and honoring others whose moral courage she admired. But most striking is to re-read the pieces she wrote in the wake of 9/11 and the Abu Ghraib scandal, which constitute the book's middle section. Sontag's controversial attack on the Bush administration immediately after 9/11 may have been an act of courage or of folly, but from a distance of five years, her critique seems on the mark. Sontag's brilliance as a literary critic, her keen analytical skill and her genius for the searingly apt phrase (like her damning 'the photographs are us' in relation to the Abu Ghraib photos) are all fiercely displayed here.

- This book discusses recent theoretical and empirical developments in international migration from a gender perspective. Its main objective is to analyse the diversification and stratification of gendered migratory streams with regard to skill level, labour market integration, and legal status. The book builds upon the recent shift in scholarly research on migration, with women-centred research shifting more toward the analysis of gender. Theoretical formulations of gender as relational, and as spatially and temporally contextual have begun to inform gendered analyses of migration. The contributions to this book elaborate in more detail the broader social factors that influence migrating women’s and men’s roles, access to resources, facilities and services.

- Description
- In these 88 brief essays, the author writes about social and political issues like abortion, welfare reform, affirmative action, gun rights and control. Nor is she reluctant to turn her gaze close to home, to the gap between the Nation's high-minded principles and its largely lily-white editorial offices, for example, in her discussion of various liberal hypocrisies. Her newly written introduction calls upon feminists at the millennium to kick-start the 'stalled revolution' with renewed demands for change that, she says, would further social justice, and themselves transform those who articulate them. If there is anything to regret in this collection, it is that columns written seven years ago remain fresh today, so little progress having been made toward resolving the issues they raise.

- Description
- This publication explores the role of women as agents of diplomacy in the trans-Atlantic world since the early modern age. Chapters cover a wide range of geographical contexts, including Europe, Russia, Britain and the United States, and trace the diversity of women’s activities and the significance of their contributions. Through a selection of case studies, the book throws into new perspective the operations of political power in local and national domains, bridging and at times reconceptualising the relationship of the private to the public.

- Description
- Contributors to this illustrated volume focus on the influence of Southernwhite women on the fund-raising campaigns to build monuments, architectural memorials, and outdoor ritual spaces as means to express their deeply felt perspectives about the Civil War. Other contributors explore the creative alternative ways in which people outside the white southern culture - African Americans and Union supporters - wrote their very different histories on the southern landscape. The authors trace the origins, objectives, and changing consequences of Conferderate monuments over time and the dynamics of individuals and organisations that sponsored them.

- Description
- This collection of essays examines the relationship between women's movements and states in West Europe and North America, as states have relocated their formal powers and policy-making responsibilities. Since the 1980s, North American and West European states have reduced the scope and volume of their national responsibilities, increasingly employing neoliberal free market rhetoric, and developed transnational economic and political authorities. Simultaneously, second-wave women's movements have been transformed. Movements that were revolutionary in rhetoric, autonomous from states, and largely informally organized in the 1970s are, by the 1990s, employing moderate neoliberal rhetoric, entering state institutions as active participants, and creating more formal organizations. Contributors examine how movements have influenced the reconfiguration of nation-states and how these changes have influenced the goals, mobilization, tactics, success, and rhetoric of women's movements in various West European and North American countries. This volume contributes theoretical insights and empirical evidence to the growing literature on states and movements.

- Description
- In this anthology of essays the contributors address the ways in which western women have experienced the twentieth century. The writings go beyond the categorisations of gender, class, race, and ethnicity by providing a deeper understanding of women and distribution of power through examinations of generations, family and career, religion, sexual orientation, geography, and political preferences. The collection is arranged around five themes: politics and power, women and mobility, staying on the land, uncovering women's voices, and reshaping cultural images and ideas.
